With anger spreading in the chest To guard against a vainly barking tongue

I selected this line of poetry, because after dealing with something that was really frustrating at work this week, I understand this feeling. Through this poem, I feel connected with Sappho. While I am usually more drawn to her more romantic work, I think this poem shows how she covers the breadth of women's experience. There are many times where I feel anger about things, yet I have to remind myself to not speak too soon, and instead take the time to choose my words wisely.

Looking at Carson’s aesthetic setting of these texts reminds me sharply of e.e. cummings, who I think must have been very familiar with Sappho, although he couldn’t have known this translation. His poems are often nonsensical, but in a way that makes you feel like you’re overhearing a language that you only partially speak, or looking through tiny portholes onto fantastical scenes, some of which are very erotic, That’s exactly how I felt reading these poems.

This one strikes me because of how deeply it resonates with me. Even fragmented, I feel she’s writing about one of my deepest personal regrets: that greatest intimacy can beget greatest antagonism. Gives me this profound sense of wonder for the human character and its threads of psyche that tie us spiritually to individuals many of thousands of years ago.

This quote, to me, indicates in one way or another that Sappho has this perception of time. I feel that we could go on and on about what these words mean, imaginations running, but with or without clarity, this quote touches upon the very aspect of time that we so frequently encounter in our class discussions. -serra

I selected the portion of the poem because of the feeling of holding one's tongue. This poem invokes what frustration feels like. I am often not frustrated or angry in everyday situations. Still, I know the feeling of holding one's tongue or being silenced when you cannot speak freely.
