Lincoln had less than a year of formal schooling but was a voracious reader who taught himself as much as he could.

His mother died when he was nine years old, a painful loss that was compounded by his difficult relationship with his father. His stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston, became a positive influence, encouraging his love for learning. 

He served in the Illinois state legislature from 1834 to 1840.

Lincoln was a successful lawyer in Illinois, known for his debating and public speaking skills.

In 1860, Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States as the first Republican president.

His election came at a time of intense tension over slavery, and he led the country through the Civil War, which began shortly after his inauguration.

During his time in office, he delivered the Gettysburg Address in 1863 and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared enslaved people in Confederate states to be free.

He was reelected for a second term in 1864. 

On April 15, 1865, just days after the Civil War ended, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

His death was a national tragedy, but he is remembered as one of America's greatest presidents for preserving the nation and his efforts to end slavery.
