A theme of the book is perseverance because the character never gave up. When Davey was washed away by the current, he kept trying to get back to land even though he could not see without his glasses. Davey joked when the author said "He coughed up a single sharp laugh at himself for thinking a disposable plastic jug was an island" (Northrop 67). Davey saw a shark and wanted to keep his legs out of the water, which the author explained by saying "The bottle was enough to keep him afloat without that, but he had to hold on tight and pull it down lower into the water" (Northrop 117). The picture cordinates with the theme because Davey is holding onto the jug for his life while a shark is underneath him and the cliff climber is holding on for his life too.

I learned that tiger sharks have stripes on their back and they can sense prey from miles away under the water. A personal issue broadened by the book is being lost at sea and shark attacks. The author explained Davey being lost by writing "He didn't know how far out he'd gone or even in which direction" (Northrop 55). Citizens should obey laws at the beach and they would not be stranded at sea. The picture relates to the problem because this person is lost at sea, just like Davey is.

There have been many shark attacks over the years. The problem is not big but is growing. Since 1958, there have been over one thousand shark attacks in the United States alone. Many sharks do not attack humans because they like to, it is because they confuse humans as other animals. "Your'e 75 times more likely to get killed by a lightning strike than a shark attack" (CBS) says CBS news and their study on shark attacks.

Sharks have great sensors as explained "With a threshold of around five one-billionths of a volt, it could sense nearly anything that moved down there" (Northrop 7). A shark from miles away could sense a human swimming at the beach. Great whites, bulls, and tigers are the only three sharks with double digit human kills. The three sharks are not always violent, but have the genes to attack at any moment. If there is a no swimming sign, it should be obeyed for safety at the ocean.
