Summary

Connecting schools around the world is becoming more and more common. Such examples include video conferencing and social networking. This allows students to make local and global connections around the world. A third grade class read a historical fiction book and attempted to find another class that could video conference with them. This class would have more experience with the animal they read about due to their geographical location. The teacher reached out to other classes using her PLN on Twitter and acquired a class that was available to complete this task. At the end, they were able to video conference and share ideas, etc (Hale & Fisher, 2013).

The class decided to go ahead and do more video conferencing using Skype. They read and discussed various books, one of which was "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs." Because they could connect with other classrooms around the world, they were able to see some books in Spanish. In order to relate this to learning targets, they worked on the plot of the stories.

Additional Instructional Strategy

One additional strategy I would like to implement would be note taking. I teach third grade and something we have been working on is key details and how to pull out certain notes from a presentation. We do this because there is constructed response questions on MAP testing and it will help them with how to answer short answer questions.

T.
