Gold- In the present day, there are companies such as NovaGold. NovaGold is a company that explores parts of the Earth that rumored have gold deep under the ground. There most recent project has been gaining permission to dig in Alaska. During Sebastian's exploration he was motivated by a rumor that there was “gold” in Cuba. These rumors had come from other Spanish explorers that have set foot on Cuban land. During his exploration he was given the opportunity to determine if settling Cuba was a profitable choice. Both of these examples show motivation of exploring unknown territory in search of “gold.”
GLORY- In history, we have believed that there is only and can only be life, for humans, on Earth. Despite past discoveries, NASA became curious about the planet Mars. This curiosity has brought them to present day. They are trying to determine if the planet Mars can support life and possibly be colonized in the future. During Sebastian's exploration his motive was to prove Christopher Columbus's finding incorrect. Columbus’s maps read that present day Cuba was a peninsula. Sebastian believed that it was an island. During his exploration he circumnavigated the island of Cuba proving Christopher's maps incorrect. Another reason was to determine if Cuba could be settled or is wurth settling by the Spanish. Both of these examples show how people in search of future settlement, proved past theories wrong in search of glory.

Treating the Natives- Upon arrival the Spanish took Natives and used them as slaves. These slaves were taken back to Hispaniola and forced to work on their farms and early settlements. As a result, there population were destroyed. As result of this exploration, the Caribbean countries now speak Spanish and carried on traditions that the Spanish brought.
How he changed Maps- Sebastian's exploration changed maps around the world. When Christopher Columbus sailed the Americas he was convinced that Cuba was a peninsula. When Sebastian went on his exploration his theory was that Cuba was a island. During his navigation he was able to circumnavigate Cuba proving that it was a island. Upon his return, he spread the news to all mapmakers and navigators that Cuba was indeed an island changing maps forever.

Mariner's Astrolabe- This tool called a Mariner's Astrolabe was used to measure latitude of as ship by measuring the sun's noon altitude. This tool was used by Sebastian on his exploration through the Caribbean. Sebastian used this tool to find direction and location while he was navigating around Cuba.
Cross Staff- This tool called a "Cross Staff" was used to measure latitude and direction. It is also used to measure the horizontal and celestial body. With this tool the explorers could know their latitudinal location and what direction they were going or needed to go.

Spain- When the Spanish colonized Cuba, their language came with them. The island Cuba now speaks Spanish as their primary language. Nowadays there are multiple countries who are examples of cultural blending. For example, the province of Quebec speaks french and English. This was a result of the French colonizing part of Canada. Both of these are examples of how cultural blending affected the world today.
Ocampo- Sebastian’s exploration changed maps forever. When Christopher Columbus went on his exploration he classified Cuba as a peninsula. Sebastian's theory was that Cuba was an island with open water to the East. During his exploration, he proved his theory correct by circumnavigating Cuba. Upon his return, he spread the news through Hispaniola and eventually through world about his discovery. Once people heard the news about his exploration and discovery, map makers were forced to change their maps of the Americas. This also impacted the overall knowledge of the Americas. Now the Spanish had a new task. That task was to explore the water to the East of Cuba. For centuries we believed that Earth is the only planet that can support human life. NASA was interested by this theory and started to look at planets that could potentially sustain human life. They were interested by the planet Mars. After studying the planets climate and terrain, they found that Mars could potentially hold human life in the future. With those results, NASA next project is to send a microbes to Mars. With these results, the overall knowledge of space has changed. Both of these are examples of how discoveries changed the way people look at the world and changed knowledge forever.

There are many reasons for why the Spanish explored. One reason for sending Sebastian de Ocampo on his exploration, was to prove his theory correct. Maps created by Christopher Columbus said that Cuba was a peninsula. Sebastian's theory was that Cuba was an island and that there was water to the west. On his exploration he proved his theory correct. This reason was positive because it gave Sebastian and Spain glory of discovering the truth about Cuba. Another reason for sending Sebastian on his journey was that the Spanish believed that there was gold to be found in Cuba. Upon colonization three years later, the Spanish discovered gold on Cuba. This reason was positive because it gave wealth to the Spanish. Another reason for exploring was that they needed people to work on their civilizations and plantations in Hispaniola. When the Spanish arrived, they took well-built men and Native teens to the island of Hispaniola to do manual labor. This reason was negative because they took the Natives to perform labor and destroyed the native population.
