The Reading Center: Retelling a Story with Puppets

After reading the story with the students, we would transition to the puppet theater shown above. In order to facilitates the children's retelling of the story, I would have them perform a puppet show during this center. This will provide the students the opportunity to show their reading comprehension, by taking what they just heard and retelling the story as they remember it. Retelling a story also helps students practice their speech skills. This creative outlet even gives students the opportunity to use their imagination and come up with voices and gestures.

Along with a copy of The Three Little Pigs book, I would also be sure to get 3 pigs and a wolf puppet so there is consistency between the characters in the story and the props given. This will help assist them in making connections and retelling the events in the story.

Having an alphabet train on the wall is a great way to expose children to the letters of the alphabet in a way that is eye catching. I find it increasingly helpful that this particular train includes pictures of things that start with each letter to help children make further connections between print, letters, and words.

Having a letter rug in you classroom is a great tool to reinforce exposure to letters. You can assign your students a different letter square to sit on during the year or even ask a student to sit on a specific letter and see if they can identify the letter correctly.

The most common way to promote print awareness is setting up a cozy reading center. There should be an area in your classroom with plenty of options of books for the children to look at or choose to be read to them. It is also important to include comfy chairs, rugs, and pillows to create an enticing environment that makes children want to spend time in a good book.

While it is important to ensure that your classroom is a print rich environment, be careful that there isn't too much print. You need to be intentional about print usage so that the children don't feel overwhelmed. In this picture there is plenty of print from posters, to bulletin boards, and bins, but there is also a good mix of pictures and other decor to create a welcoming environment that fosters print awareness.
