Implicit Bias Training is not a DEI strategy

“What evidence do I need to be certain that [fill-in-the-blank] is bringing us closer to our DEI goals?”

Hint: asking participants in a follow-up survey if they enjoyed the training does not provide an accurate pulse on training efficacy. Try questions like these instead:

Are your internal promotion rates becoming more equitable across gender, race, ethnicity, and age?

Have you reduced employee churn among women, mothers, and people of color?

Is your pay gap shrinking?

What’s representation like in your C-Suite? Board room?

Are the number of HR complaints decreasing?

These questions will help you create a more data-driven DEI strategy.

https://www.pipelineequity.com/katicas-voice/implicit-bias-training-not-effective/?utm_source=Pipeline+Equity+Newsletter&utm_campaign=af67a08494-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_06_26_09_19_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b9bd9191fe-af67a08494-76669547

Companies typically put the burden of Diversity Equity and Inclusion on HR Managers & Directors requiring "change" via diversifying the new hires by a certain percentage...thereby creating "diversity hires." This is only one part of this complex problem/opportunity. Business culture, process and protocols, leadership and management attitudes and behavior all contribute to the extent an organization is multicultural and antiracist. As leaders, it is important to consider all these contributors as you embark on equity and inclusion initiatives. Source: Veronica Smith @ data2insight

Colorblindness is the racial ideology that posits the best way to end discrimination is by treating individuals as equally as possible, without regard to race, culture, or ethnicity. Color blindness relies on the concept that race-based differences don't matter, and ignores the realities of systemic racism. The idea of a color blind society, while well intentioned, leaves people without the language to discuss race and examine their own bias.

An equity and inclusion organizational assessment is a systematic process for collecting, analyzing, and making meaning of data (e.g. interviews, surveys, document and practice review) that paints a picture of an organization on key multicultural organization dimensions. This is a critical step to identifying where the organization as a system is and where it wants to go on the continuum of multicultural organizational development. The result of this process is a road map for getting from where you are to where you want to go. This road map is incorporated into the organization’s strategic and operational planning.
Cultural responsiveness and cultural competence

According to Betancourt et. al. the filed of 'cultural competence' emerged as one strategy to address racial and ethnic disparities across the United States. A definition of cultural competence that we use is: Cultural competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and polices that come together in a system and enable that system to work effectively in cross-cultural and multiracial situations/settings. (Cross et. al. (1989)) Cultural responsiveness is defined as the ability to understand and consider the different cultural backgrounds of the people whom you interact, are in relationship with, work with, and serve. Cultural responsiveness is more applicable to describing individual behavior and cultural competence is more appropriate for describing organizational behavior.
