In the Beginning of the story (chapters 1-5) we are introduced to Jonas and his family. The story starts to introduce us by having Jonas tell us when it is set and how he was feeling. Later in the chapters we learn about the community and find a little more about him such as age, about his dreams and introduces us to his friends.

Ceremony of twelve 

During chapters 6 to 8 we are told about the Ceremony of Twelve. The Ceremony of Twelve is a festival in their community were the twelves are assigned their jobs. During the ceremony of twelve Jonas was skipped as they say he had been given the most important job of all. Jonas (and everyone else) was confused, worried and a little bit frightened as the last time some had been assigned his job it had gone terribly wrong and the community had gone through suffering like they had never experienced before.

TIME WITH THE GIVER

After the ceremony of twelve he was assigned the role of receiver, this job meant Jonas was to receive the memory of the community. Jonas had been warned of immense suffering but as he had never encountered anything like this it caused him pain beyond his wildest dreams. He was taught about war death and had physical pain inflicted on him like sun burns. This part of the book happened in chapters 9-20 so it was the bulk of the book. Within these chapters he also encounters many amazing things like snow sunshine and rainforests. Ultimately though Jonas decides the bad outweighs the good and together they hatched a plan to give the memories back to the community. 

 

The ending 

Within the ending the (chapters 21to 23) Jonas and the giver hatch a plan to leave the community so they can give the community back their memories. After the plan was hatched it was put straight to play. During the night exits the community this is hard for him as not only are there planes after him he is carrying a baby with him 

Asher

Asher is Jonas’s best friend and doesn’t play a major part in the book and mainly plays a comical relief. He is often clumsy and renowned for mucking around. However, he does play a part in Jonas’s choice to leave the community. Asher and a group of friends were playing a shooting game in the park when Jonas walked past. He had received memories from the giver earlier that day about war and killing. This pain caused Jonas to complain to the giver about it and ultimately the hatch a plan to give the community back there memories.

Dad is Jonas’s father in the story. He Plays a pivotal part in the story when Jonas (the receiver) asks to see the footage from the release. At first Jonas believed the release was a time for happiness and joy but he soon finds out the truth when he sees his own father injecting a baby with a lethal toxin. Jonas then asks his father about the baby and the father lied to him.
