IMF

Imposed SAPs on in debt countries such as Zambia and Ghana. This forced the state to play a reduced part in the economy privatising state energy and water. This also lead to reduced funding in healthcare and education. In Zambia for example as a result of SAPs inflation rose by 100% and GDP per capita dropped by 1.6% annually from 1960-1990 as a result of policies put in place by the IMF creating serious economic hardship and hindering development in the country

MDG targets aren’t reliable. Hans Rosling says that progress is uneven and the poorest countries can’t achieve these goals. For example an MDG target was to reduce world poverty to 1.2% in each country. Bangladesh only managed to get to 1.74%. Whilst overall this did get 836 million people out of extreme poverty globally, just over 500 million of these people are from China and is due to the economic progress of China which is due to their governments open door policy.

IGO’s focus on economic development over environmental sustainability. In brazil the WTO demands led to a 36% decline in forest size in 2023. Therefore, governments are left to prevent this e.g. cattle ranches are required to retain 80% lands natural state and they aim to reach climate neutrality by 2050. Therefore this costs money ro solve and thefe is less disposable heath expenditure for healthcare spending. Moreover, environmental degradation leads to harmful substances in the environment, limiting air quality and cumulating in greater health concerns and subsequently restrictive potential for development ultimately inflicted by IGO oversights

Igos have had huge significance in improving human development due to cooperating in many aspects. In social element the WHO (world health organisation) offers guidance on vaccines and healthcare which is crucial in developing countries. WHO achieved 80%immunisation coverage for major diseases such as polio. Major evidence of this success is in Ethiopia, in 1988 Ethiopia had 350,000 polio cases whereas in 2015 there is only 33 this presents major reduction. WHO created global polio eradication imitative to fight polio across the world.

IGO’s focus on one size fits all solutions that don’t adapt to their cultural landscape.

In Brazil the Bolsa Família Program Lula da Silva made a conditional cash transfer program that meant if families sent their children to school and got them vaccinated they would receive monthly financial aid. This improves health in the younger generation as aswell as increases their education meaning that they can access higher jobs later on. This programme lifted over 20 million people out of poverty and was designed with Brazil’s specific socioeconomic challenges in mind
