Finally, water reaches Nyas ankles as she walks. Nya untangles her gourd from the plastic container fills it with muddy water and drinks from it she then pours the contents of the huge container into the gourd and reties it.

Salvas's eyes were filled with tears. He notices smoke from the bombings on the horizon. A woman sitting beside a pond is closer to him. He is relieved to see the Dinka tribe ritual scar designs on her forehead which are the same tribe as Salva.

They slept by the road while keeping watch. The next morning, they saw soldiers from their side of the war. The soldiers sorted them into camps. Even young men just a few years older than Salva had to be recruited. After a while, they looked at Salva. They pointed a gun at his chin, but he then realized it was just to put his head up. He was put into the children's and women's groups.
