I definitely think I already learned a lot from the first module. I learned how important it really is for students to gain exposure to reading and writing starting at a very young age. I also never really thought about how important it is to read out loud to students but now I know that it is surely something that I want to include in my classroom as a teacher. I also think it is important that we learned how all students are going to be at somewhere different in regards to their literacy. I think the activities we did fit well with the objectives and I think that exploring our own literacy was beneficial in understanding the impact that teachers, parents, and even personal attitude can have on literacy. I think as I approach future modules I just need to get the hang of what is due when and what portions we will be doing in class. The first week is always a little confusing trying to figure out everything for all of my classes. I'll attach the rubric for this week onto bright space.

I think this week I clearly met and understand all the objectives. From reading all the articles, watching the videos, having an in class discussion, and then posting and reading my peers discussion posts, I was really able to understand the material from this week and get a really good idea about each of the theories as well as culturally relevant and anti-racist teaching. I think it was interesting to learn about how students actually learn and all the elements that are involved in learning. I enjoyed being able to read my peers discussion posts so that I can compare what they took away from each of the articles to what I took away from each of the articles. This really helped me to meet some of the objectives because hearing different views allows me to more broadly understand the material. I also think the in class discussion was really helpful because I was able to visually see everything written on the board which helps me to organize the ideas in my head.

I really enjoyed this weeks module because I liked how hands on and interactive it was. I think the time we had in class to work with our learning teams was a really good way to learn the material and get it solidified through my head because I actually got to practice it. It was fun to be able to pretend to be the teacher and use the predictable chart to teach various different concepts, like phonics and phonemic awareness. I think it also helped to watch the videos that were posted on bright space about morning messages, phonics, and phonemic awareness. This gave us a good example on what we were supposed to do. I think that writing the POP was a really good way to tie everything that I learned together and have it in one place. I was able to come up with some of my own ideas and start a document that I can really use in the future during my teaching career.

This week I believe I met and understand all the objectives. I really like working with our learning teams to do the activities because I think we all help understand the material better and seeing each other teach certain topics helps us to see what works really well and what maybe doesn't work. I think my learning team works well together so that helps too. I added to my portfolio of practice again and I came up with at least 3 teaching methods for vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. This way I can keep the document and refer back to it when I am in practice if I ever need to review the pillars and have ideas for teaching them. I also think its really helpful to watch videos of teachers in real classrooms because it allows us to see the teaching methods in real practice and we can see the reaction from the students and how engaged they are.

I enjoyed this weeks module. Prior to this week I really was unsure of the differences between an interactive read aloud and a shared reading. After making the lesson plans, it is very clear to me where these are different and where they share similarities. I think that actually making a lesson plan is really good practice because we are going to have to make so many in the future and it allows us to really think about how we would bring this into a real classroom. I think it was more realistic than making some of the videos we have been making because in those videos we obviously don't have real children to see how they are reacting and engaging. I also learned a lot about the language experience approach because I really had no idea what that was before this week. I think that is a really fun way for students to actually be involved in the reading and writing process.

During this weeks module I think I met the objectives quite well. In the discussion board I made a post comparing interactive and shared writing and replied to some of my peers, and then in class my group and I all got the chance to actually put these teaching strategies to practice. I do think it can be a little confusing remembering which one is which when referencing shared writing vs interactive writing, and then also thinking about how those compare to shared and interactive reading. I think after practicing these all in class, it became really clear how you can really bring these into a classroom and then even combine shared and interactive reading and writing together. These things go hand in hand and I think that is really important to remember when talking about teaching literacy.

This weeks module was definitely one of my favorites that we have done so far. I thought it was really fun to see a bunch of early writing from young children. This was not something I had really ever done before so it was my first time actually looking at their work and analyzing it from a standpoint of trying to see how much they know about writing. I was really shocked to see how much some scribbles across a page can tell us about a students development and progression. Moving forward, I will definitely be asking students about their work so that I can gain a better understanding of what they actually understand. This is also a really great way to get to know your students because often times they are going to be writing about things that they really care about. I also didn't realize that just drawing pictures can tell us about writing because students will often times include some sort of labels or lettering.

During this weeks module I was further able to assess a child's writing and help determine where they are at in regards to being totally conventional. I think working with our learning teams on the assessing writing page really help me to understand Gentry's spelling stages as well as Spandel's 6 traits. I think these things can be difficult to apply if you aren't actually putting them to real life practice. Using real writing from students is super helpful to get a good idea on what a child's writing might actually look like.

I think this weeks module was one that is going to be really helpful in the future when it comes time to have my own classroom and set it up the way I want to. I liked being able to hear everyone's ideas about how they are going to set up their classrooms. I also think it was really beneficial to dive deeper into what writers workshop because when I was in elementary school I had writers workshops but I never really thought much about them other than it was a time for us to just write but now I realize that there is a greater purpose behind it. I think I learned a bit about myself during this week as well because when we were told to write in class freely I realized that I struggle a little when it comes to writing with no plan. I am used to planning out most of what I want to say or at least having an idea about where I wanna go with a piece of writing before beginning.

This weeks module really helped me to understand more about writers workshop and how to actually bring it into a classroom. I think watching the videos super helpful because I feel like I always learn better and get a deeper understanding of the material when I see an actual teacher using techniques in her classroom and I can see the reaction and engagement from the children. I also thought that the reading from the WWW book was helpful because it laid out 20 days of lessons for writers workshop so that I can see how you introduce it to children and make them comfortable with it where they full understand what they are expected to do. I think my learning team did a good job on the lesson plan as well. We came up with a pretty good lesson I think, and I can envision it in my head how it would go in a classroom.

I enjoyed working with my learning team on this weeks module to create lesson plans for teaching craft and revision skills. I think this was helpful to come up with some ideas on ways that I can teach craft in my classroom and finding books that I can use to teach these lessons to my students. I also thought the revision one was useful because I never really thought about different aspects of revision that you can teach to kids because many times when you just tell them to revise their work they aren't really sure what to change or what to look for to change. I thought it was helpful to watch the videos of teachers teaching these and having conferences with students because it is always more helpful to actually see it being done by someone else.

This week we started readers workshop which I think is also a really interesting topic to talk about just like writers workshop. We had the opportunity to see the differences between readers and writers workshop as well as the similarities. Although we did not meet face to face this week, I still think the readings and videos we watched did a good job of explaining readers workshop and what that entails. My group did a nice job of making a google doc to share and complete the learning team activity. I think the learning team activity was helpful in getting us thinking about how to bring readers workshop into our own classrooms and how to set that up for our students.

We had our second week of reader's workshop this week and we focused a lot more on reading skills and strategies. Although I wasn't able to attend class in person this week, I was still able to virtually work with my learning team on the activity to create some plans for bringing reading strategies into our classrooms. I think this was beneficial for us because not only do we have to give the students time to read, but it is our job to supply them with the tools they need in order to improve their literacy by learning reading strategies and skills. I thought that the readings from the Reading Workshop book were especially helpful this week because it really outlined some lesson ideas and gave a ton of great options for books that you can use to teach each skill and strategy.

During this week we continued learning about readers workshop and talked about conferencing and guided reading. In my opinion, these are some of the most important aspects of readers workshop because this is how we can determine how much our readers know and what they need to focus on in the future. Conferencing with your students is how you can really get to know them as a reader so that you can truly help them. I think it was nice this week to not have a learning team activity because of Thanksgiving and everyone leaving to go home or traveling. I am hoping that everything still continues to move smoothly as we transition to being fully online.
