This quote was taken from when Jonas and his friend Asher were playing a game outside. Jonas finally realized what the game was really about after receiving a memory about war.  The sound effect “Blam” mimics gunfire, helping him come to the conclusion that they were playing a violent combat game. It can be inferred that only Jonas and the giver know this, as the game has been played for generations. None of the citizens have memories of the past, so they wouldn’t know that what they were doing was wrong. They were hidden from the truth, blind to reality. This is taken from when Jonas is given the memory of a boat ride.  A serene mood is created as Jonas describes the scenery. This is an example of imagery because Jonas is describing his boat ride in a way to help you vividly visualize the scene. He describes objects, their color, and their location.

This quote is taken from dinner time, which is when Jonas's family shares their feelings about the day. Lilly is describing the visiting group of Sevens that came from another community to her childcare group.  She explains how they didn't follow the rules which made her very angry. This quote is comparing the visitors from her childcare group to animals. It shows that in Lilly's eyes the kids were being wild and erratic. Although the description in the text suggests they were just being kids and playing. It can be inferred that Lily is unaccustomed to this type of behavior since she is taught from very young age in her society that she must be a model citizen at all times.

This quote is taken from when the giver is transmitting the memory of fire to Jonas. It uses personification to compare the behavior of the fire as licking at his torn bone and flesh. This shows that the fire engulfed him and it just kept "licking" at his injuries which means it was creating further damage. The fire was unrelenting. This creates a distressed, intense mood. It can be inferred that Jonas is in shock because he has never experienced pain, and his first experience with it is with fire, one of the worst types of pain. The bad things in the world are being revealed to him.

This is an example of Imagery, because Jonas is trying to describe the feeling of snow the best he could because he never experienced anything like it.

This quote was taken from when the giver showed Jonas real pain for the first time. The simile compares the feeling of in his leg to the feeling of being cut with a hatchet. This helps to show that the pain was slow and sharp. Jonas described that the hatchet was hot, showing that his wound “burned”. The word choice creates a distraught mood. It can be inferred that this was caused because of the exposure to the cold for a long period of time, which can cause the water in your cells to freeze and crate a burning sensation.

This is an example of personification because the apple did not actualy jump out of his hand, it was droped and catched by Asher.

This quote was taken from when Jonas was given the memory of war. It shows how gorey and tragic war is by describing a boy dying as his village was raided. The description creates an intense, terrifying mood. It can be inferred that this experience traumatized Jonas. People in his town were “released” using human euthanasia, and the town was oblivious to what happened during these ceremonies. After being sheltered for so long, Jonas was seeing what cold truth of what death really was.

In this quote where Jonas lives everyone is identical , so the visual color of his eyes show that he can "see beyond". Light eyes are a metaphor of people who see the world in a different way.
