I got tired of hearing this. It is not open-ended. It is a yes/no answer, without indicating whether the student knows anything about mitochondria.

While this is true, it is formulated in a very simplistic manner and is overly repeated in teaching. It doesn't promote deep understanding, only superficial memorization.
