Why I chose this lesson?

Literature has always been one of my favorite subjects in school, so teaching it for me would be more of a passion project. I can remember being in class and we would dissect a poem and find little details that were significant for the meaning of the poem. It was almost like a scavenger hunt for the meanings that were hidden. We were looking for metaphors, alliteration, assonance, etc. Although it was complex it was also really fun to find those things. Another memory I have in high school we were reading the great Gatsby, and that book has so many small details to look for that are important for the storyline. So every night we would read this book we would find something new that meant something bigger. So that was one reason why I picked this lesson, and I intentionally picked a older grade to do this with. I focus more on the younger grades in my past lesson plans and so I wanted to up the challenge and expectation of this grade.

Roving Reporter Activity!

I will be utilizing the roving reporter activity from the "Cool Cat Teacher Blog". I thought it was in genius to help my students teach each other the continent that they're learning about, but also have a chance to have fun with it. This is how I will be using this to dive deeper into our literature lesson. We are learning about 5 different things:

Determine the themes of myths, fables, and folktales

Identify story elements

Read poetry

Read drama

Summarize a story

So I'll break my classroom into three separate groups. One will be reporters, one will be a poetry group, and the last will be for a story. Each group will have two days of classroom time to dissect their story or poem. One reporter will be in each group so that they have the information they need to use in their "news story". Then when it's time to present the news, our reporters from each group will come back in front of the class and report to everyone what they heard. This gives my class a chance to get more of that student-student interaction, learn the content on their own, and reteach what they've been taught. My hope is that this solidifies the subject matter we've been discussing, and it helps me better see any potholes in my content I might need to go over again.
