Week one of stimulus

We were given a stimulus by our teacher and it was an African drum. In my group we thought of ideas such as ragae and gamalan. We picked the best idea and we did a verse of ragae inspired by the drum.
The instruments we used was two acoustic guitars, two vocals, drums and a keyboard player(me). I thought of using the chords of f,a,e,c. The guitars also played the same chords but we played it offbeat, it was played in a way so you knew that it was ragae if you never have heard it. The singer was singing noises such as oooo she was fallowing the beat.the drums beat was quite slow. Overall our piece was a good response to the stimulus but we could have developed out playing more and think of a chorus.

We were given a different stimulus on week two, it was a comic of a truck driver, a car driver and a road. The basic ideas everyone has was the woman was being stalked or someone had been hit by a car. But our group had the idea that was out of the box, we thought the woman and the truck driver were past lovers so the woman is trying to get away from her past. We used sad chords and was in the minor key to emphasise how the sadness the woman felt. I used the chords aB,f,eB,D. I arpeggiated the chords to give the piece a better sound. The other instruments used where; vocals, piano and guitar. The piece sounded great but we had sound issues and needed more time so we could write more as it sounded too repetitive.

We were given a similar stimulus to week two it was in the same depressing style and it was a comic strip of a Syrian girl who had lost her dad. All the basic ideas where based around the fact that she lost her dad but the group I was in wrote a song about the destruction around her in Syria, we focused around the broken streets and bombs. The instruments used were a piano, bass, guitar and two vocalists. The group sounded good, we had a better structure than any other stimulus I had been given and we even had two versus and a chorus. I used the chords c,a,g and e. The bassist came up with these notes and the guitar and piano followed this by doing the chords of these notes. The piece was applauded but we could improve by turning the piano up and having our singers focus a bit more as they forgot the tune.

In week four we were given a completely different stimulus, it was a weird a moving imagine of rainbows and unicorns. I worked in a different group compared to the other weeks, we came up with different ideas and put them together. I decided to go with the key of C because it sounds up beat and it would go well with the stimulus I arpeggiated the chords to give it more of a mystical feel and it was played higher up. The lyrics resembled happiness and was on about unicorns. We worked well as a group but we had alot of disagreements but manged to get past them. Our performance went okay but we didn't have a great timing but one thing that did go well was that I played all the right notes on the piano . We could improve the piece by using all of work time and concentrating more.

In week five we got to use our own stimulus and me and my group used the stimulus disagreement. I used the key of G minor this means that I used Bb and Eb, this gives the piece a darker feel so it fits the stimulus of disagreements and how they make people feel. I only used chords throughout this piece because it's a pop styled song. In my group we bounced ideas off each other and came up with a spider diagram, the lyrics were talking about popularity. We repeated the chorus and the chorus only had four lines because it made it catchier, people were singing the song two weeks later. The performance went really well the singers were great and I didn't make any mistakes whilst playing. The sound levels were perfect and the only criticism I received was to use a different chord for the ending, I should of used the chord F instead of G.

In week six we got to use our own stimulus, me and my group came up with the idea of doing another pop song but it was sad, it was about relationships. I used the key of f# minor this means I used the sharps of C, F and G. By using this key it gives the piece a sadder feel because minor is usually a sad sounding tone and most depressing or meaningful songs are written in this. I used just chords throughout this and I used dynamics effectively to make the piece more powerful. We did a spider diagram for the lyrics to make it easier to come up with ideas. The performance went really well, I played all the parts correct and the singers sang the song really well. The only thing that didn't go to plan in the performance was that the speaker kept having a technical difficulty. We could improve by adding a soft drum beat in the background to give it more texture.

In week seven we used the stimulus of seasons but it didn't go very well. We tried writing lyrics but we couldn't think of any ideas, I managed to think of chords for the piece but we ended up scrapping it and doing a song about sadness. We only managed to come up with half a song but it was good for the fifteen minutes we had left. It was in A minor which is usually typical for a sad song.
We did receive compliments and the critic was that we should have completed the song but it was understandable why we didn't with the time we had.

Week eight of stimulus

In week eight our stimulus was about past relationships. We already had the lyrics written by our singer so in this lesson me and Evie had to come up with chords to go along with the piece. We used D minor because it fitted the singers voices. We used the chords A, E and F. The guitar had a capo and fret five and the keyboard was transposed to D. The guitar was higher pitched than the piano and I think this worked well because it gave the song more depth and feel. Half way through the song the instruments stopped playing and the singers did an acapella then the instruments came back in when our singer said a certain word. Without this the performance wouldn't have been as good. Everyone enjoyed the song because it was a little bit different to what we usually do, the sound levels were good and the singers hit all the notes. To improve me and the guitarist could stay in time more and remember which bit we had to be silent on because we stopped playing too early.

My best given stimulus and own stimulus

The best given stimulus for me was week 4 this is because everyone started to settle in and ideas started happening more frequently. The stimulus for that week was a motion picture of unicorns and rainbows. Me and my group decided to do a lullaby and it was in major to give it more of a happy feel. I played in the key of C and I used arpeggiated chords and played them at speed so emphasize the craziness of the motion picture. We got mainly good criticism but the problems were the singers forgetting the lyrics and we needed to complete the song and come up with a better ending.
For my own stimulus I think week five was best, our stimulus was based on disagreements that happened during that week. The key I was in was G minor this means I used Bb and Eb. By using this key it gives the song a powerful soulful feeling and portrays the singers frustration. The lyrics were about popularity. I think this was our best performance because the song was catchy and it was well structured. Everyone enjoyed the piece but the only problem was that I should of ended the piece with a different chord.
