Both Amanda and Laura can get agitated when it comes to Tom's attitude and selfishness. Tom always picks arguments with Amanda and vice versa, and sometimes he leaves his mother shocked with the things he chooses to say. An example of this is in scene three, as Tom snaps at Amanda and says, "What in hell...!" but Amanda cuts him off by exclaiming, "Don't you talk to me like that-" to which Tom interrupts, finishing his sentence, "...Am I supposed to do?" Amanda continues to ask him, "What's the matter with you? Have you gone out of your senses?" Tom argues, "Yes, you've driven me out of them." Amanda lashes out and exclaims, "What is the matter with you lately, you big-big- idiot?" (Pg. 22) In scene 5, after Tom apologizes and they discuss Laura and getting her a gentleman caller, Amanda carries on to say, "Overcome selfishness! Self, self, self is all that you ever think of!" After Tom asks her what he can do about getting Laura a gentleman caller. Kanye West and Donald Trump are both individuals that many people get agitated with because of their attitude towards what they stand for politically.

The majority of the play, when it comes to Tom's character, describes him as being a smoker. He seems to constantly have a cigarette between his fingers. Scene one starts it off by stating, "There he stops and lights a cigarette." (Pg. 11) and there are multiple other quotes similar to this. The next page shows an argument between Tom and Amanda about the way he eats and presents himself at the table. Tom gets frustrated and says "I'm getting a cigarette." To which Amanda replies, "You smoke too much." (Pg. 12) In the beginning of scene 7, the stage directions state, "Discovered leaning against grill on fire-escape landing, as before, and smoking." (Pg. 41) This situation can easily be compared to Chandler Bing from the TV show "Friends" in which he keeps getting back in the habit of smoking and everyone keeps trying to help him put a stop to it.

Throughout the play, Tom was described to be well dressed, much like a sailor. In scene one of "The Glass Menagerie", It gives stage directions using this example, "Tom enters dressed as a merchant sailor from alley, stage L." (Pg. 10). In the same scene, continuing stage directions, the following quote gives a more in-depth detail of his outfit: "He goes off downstage, takes off his sailor overcoat and skull fitting knitted cap and remains off-stage by dining room door for his entrance cue." (Pg. 11) In the beginning of scene three, it repeats how he's dressed, "Enter Tom, again wearing merchant sailor overcoat and knitted cap..." (Pg. 20) Popeye gives a perfect example of this as well as the Marshmallow man from Ghostbusters.

His Social/Economic Standing

As of right now, Tom seems to be getting by well with money. He has enough to support his family, which is what is most important in this moment since neither the mother or sister have a gentleman caller for support for the majority of the play. Socially, it's not going so well. He'd much rather be living out his big dream of writing but instead has to be stuck in a warehouse all day with nothing too friendly to say when he arrives home in the evening hours. In scene three, he argues with his mother about his job situation and exclaims, "For sixty-five dollars a month I give up all that I dream of doing and being ever!" (Pgs. 23-24) However, besides his social life at work, he goes to the movies. He speaks of this in scene 5, stating, "I go to the movies because- I like adventure. Adventure is something I don't have much of at work, so I go to the movies." (Pg. 30) This could be compared to the movie "Step Brothers" in which Brennan and Dale would much prefer living out their music careers, but can't because of "adulting" circumstances.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen demonstrates Tom's need to escape from reality, his job, his house, and become independent; living out his dreams as a writer. In scene three, he exclaims to Amanda, "Look, Mother- I haven't got a thing, not a single thing left in this house that I can call my own." (Pg. 22) He carries on to argue, "I know, I know. It seems unimportant to you, what I'm doing-- what I'm trying to do-- having a difference between them!" (Pg. 23) This song includes lyrics such as "Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality" "Spare him his life from this monstrosity" and "Just gotta get out, just gotta get right out of here." that can tie in to this theme.

How He Copes With Thoughts/Feelings

As details in the play describe him, Tom seems to hold back a lot. He tries not to let his thoughts nor his feelings take over him until it comes to others irritating him. When this happens, he takes his anger out on that person. At the end of scene three, after Tom and his mother come to an end with their argument, it says, "With an outraged groan he tears the coat off again, splitting the shoulder of it, and hurls it across the room." (Pg. 24) In the same scene, same page, he yells at his mother, "You ugly babbling old witch!" These moments can be compared to how Justin Bieber could sometimes react to paparazzi, or Yosemite Sam from Looney Tunes, who always had random angry outbursts.

His Motivating Desire

Tom's main goal throughout the play is to become a writer. That has been his dream throughout his life, yet he's currently stuck working in a warehouse to provide his family with support. A quote from scene three, within the argument between him and his mother, he exclaims, "Honest to God, I'd rather somebody picked up a crow-bar and battered out my brains-- than go back mornings!" He uses movies to give himself a bit of inspiration for this goal. To help him steer away from working at the warehouse, he wants to get Laura a gentleman caller to support the family, and he sets out to get one after scene 5 when Amanda says, to him, "I mean that as soon as Laura has got somebody to take care of her, married, a home of her own, independent- why, then you'll be able to do whatever you please, on land, on sea, whichever way the wind blows you!" (Pg. 31) This is then revealed in a conversation between him and Amanda in scene 6, in which he says, "I thought perhaps you wished for a gentleman caller." Amanda replies, "Why do you say that?" Tom adds, "Don't you remember wanting me to fetch one?" Amanda then goes on to the memory of suggesting it, and Tom replies, "We are going to have one." (Pg. 34) This can go in comparison with Tom and Jerry, because Tom has an ongoing goal to catch Jerry but can't because Jerry outsmarts him. Or Freddie from Icarly, who constantly tries to get Carly to be with him.
