Leadership Vision

My leadership vision is to be a servant leader. Greenleaf explained a servant leadership as accordingly.

“The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first”.

My role model whom I ultimately want to resemble is the Jesus Christ who walked on the earth 2,000 years ago. Jesus said to His disciples "But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:26-28, New American Standard Bible).

With all my heart, I want to have an increasing desire to serve my family and the people I encounter in my life. In order to achieve this vision, I set two leadership goals: become a good listener, and to be humble.

1st Leadership Goal (Become a good listener)

First leadership goal is to be a good listener. There are two subjects I have to listen to in order to be a servant leader. They are first the Bible, the words of God, and second is the people I encounter in my life. Servant’s job is to serve and to do so, he must listen to the master. It should be the expertise of the servant.

As a servant following Jesus, I have to first listen to Him. The only way to listen to Him is through reading and studying the Bible. And as a servant of the people near me according to my Lord's command, I have to listen to them carefully and look after them with all my life.

Jesus said “ ‘You shell love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is this ‘You shell love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”(Matthew 22:37-40, NASB).

Loving the God and the neighbors starts by listening to them. Being a good listener is a foundation of the servant leadership.

The second leadership goal is to be a humble leader which is one of the characteristic of new paradigm leader. True, humbleness from heart is essential for a servant’s life.

Bible says “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling” (Proverbs 16:18, NASB) and “When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom”(Proverbs 11:2, NASB).

It is very hard to imagine a pride servant but the humbleness is the true characteristic of the servant leader.

A) Share my mistakes as a teachable moments

First action plan is to “share my mistakes as a teachable moments”(Prime, & Silab, 2014). It is a very strong way to be a humble leader but at the same time it is very hard to admit the fault of my own and to reveal it to others. It is much harder to do so for the closest people, family, because people can hide their real thoughts from others but cannot do so for their family.

Here are detail steps.

1) Practice to admit my faults in front of my wife and son every time I find my faults.
2) Do the same to the RRU’s team members.
3) Do it again and again.

(B) Try to serve others in everyday life

Second plan is to try to serve others in everyday life. In daily life, it is not so hard to see someone experiencing small and big troubles. No matter how small or big they are, it will be good practices to help myself to be more humble.

It is very important to serve others when there is no rewards since even a pride men can serve others if he or she sees rewards. Only humble person can help people continuously when there are no rewards and even when there are risks.

Some examples are to be a photo taker when everyone wants to take a picture together and to help clean up the spilled coffee for someone else.

The most critical point in this action plan is not to be proud of the works of mine by remembering the fact that Jesus has died for us and He was humble all the time.
