I chose the labeling theory. Labeling theory is a way of pretty much putting a label on someone just because what they do or how they act it's seem as deviant or wrong. For example I used to have this friend when I started college back in West Palm Beach that she was muslim. She used to tell me that she was considered deviant at her muslim gatherings because she didn't like to wear her "hijab" (head scarf) even tho at her culture women are not permitted to show their hair because it shows their commitment to their God to purity. She was so bothered by it that she started to act out even more not wearing her special attire for their special celebrations and started distancing from her family completely.

Control theory, in my own words, is the idea that people stop themselves from doing any deviant acts because of inner or outer factors that control them. For example, if someone were about to rob a bank they wouldn't commit the crime because A) Their inner beliefs know that the act is wrong so, they are feeling guilty and B) There are police officers and/security guards patrolling the bank stopping the person from being able to commit the crime. These two factors control the person from being able to perform a deviant act.

Drawn from elements of Marxism (Proletariat versus the Bourgeois), conflict theory in terms of sociology contend that deviance is a deliberate choice and often political in nature. Conflict theorists reject the idea that deviance is a matter of biology, social disorganization or labels. In accordance with Karl Marx, all of society is separated into groups (rich, middle-class, low-class) who all vie for the same resources (wealth, food, power); the areas that the classes clash or contest for resources are the conflict areas.

Labeling theory is a theory that those in higher power labels those in lower power to keep their higher status. Therefore, this labeling causes a domino effect and can spin the reaction of every other interaction of an individual because of specific labeling. Labeling has a deeper affect than just being a word, it can damage/tarnish a reputation just because it is referred with lower status. This theory can help to understand how labeling truly affects others and can help to de-socialize a set way of thinking by looking past what these labels have been socialized to stand for. As an example, being labeled vegan holds a negative connotation because it is non-normative of our society to not eat meat or animal by-products, yet, this dietary restriction is actually beneficial to the individual health wise, as well as to society as a whole as it is environmentally sustainable.

This theory simply means that individuals learn deviant behavior from other peers they are associated with. This works the same way with conventional behavior. However, higher level deviants will often influence individuals more than conventional social contacts. We can use this theory to understand gangsters that exist in some areas of the world. We can take Detroit, there are places there riddled with gangs. People often go to them for financial help some times. Once those people associate with them, they become deviants themselves because of the crimes the gangs commit. Simply put, the individuals that join the gangs, they are influenced to commit their own crimes themselves.

For example, in Asian cultures it's not okay for a boy and girl to be alone together. Even if that boy is gay or that girl is a lesbian and they're best friends who grew up together, it's still the same. A boy and a girl being together and hanging out is not seem as permissible. It's more tough on the girl because she needs to be well behaved for marriage while a guy "will be a guy."

According to Travis Hirschi, these controls are attachment (relationships with other people), involvement (participation in society), commitment (benefits of conforming), and belief (morals/values).

One of the things that control theory helps explain is why deviant behavior (including crime) decreases as humans age (age-crime curve). Basically, as people develop their own families and careers, the stakes are higher for them, so they're less likely to act out.

The interaction between deviants and non-deviants has an impact on individuals choice of association. For example, many traditional, conservative, up tight hispanic parents perceive people with tattoos as deviants. Unfortunately, countless amount of people are judged based off their appearance all the time. Many old school hispanic parents associate them as perilous ir bums. Especially if you're a girl, it might give them a bad reputation. I've been judged dozens of times from many hispanic household just because I'm a girl and I have tattoos.
On the other hand, our generation is accepting towards tattoos. People with tattoos are no longer getting discriminated at certain jobs.

Everyone, whether it is done intentionally or unintentionally, judge and put labels on people simply because they have been associated with deviance through politics for example or through the media. The theory itself is not only putting a label on someone because of how they look or behave, but it also focuses on the reactions of others which then can pose as something that is deviant. The action being done is not deviant and does not get labeled to n individual, but the reaction among those who are deviant and those who are nondeviant.

Travis Hirschi crated social Bond Theory in 1969. This theory states that an individual is either more likely or less likely to be deviant or become deviant based on four main social bond factors. The first is attachment, if an individual is attached to the people around him who are committing certain acts, that individual is more likely to follow along with the group. Second, is commitment, an individual who is committed to the social norms around them are much more likely to follow suit. Third, is involvement, if that individual is involved in the social norms they are more likely to have that social bond to each behavior. Lastly, is belief, which is the investment that individual, has in the social system and what they believe is the acceptable behavior. All of these four factors play into how a social bond theorist would describe the development of deviant behaviors. We could use this theory in understanding the developed behavior of a young gang member in a low-income area. A young gang member might ascribe to deviant behaviors such as stealing because of the social bonds he/she feels to other members of the gang. They are attached to the members, they are committed to conforming to the norms of the group, they are involved in these norms (such as stealing), and they believe it is the best social system they can be apart of.

Labeling theory is the theory that our behaviors and identities are shaped by how others label us. People label each other everyday based on our actions, looks, race, etc. The labeling theory can help us to understand why labels have an effect on the individual and how it’s fueling the fire for us to commit deviant acts. If you tell someone they’re a deviant, over time they will start to believe it and pursue to keep being deviant. For example, if you don't do your homework and your teacher reacts in a negative way and tells you that you're lazy and you're going to fail you may take those labels and continue to not do your homework. It's all about how someone reacts.

The feeling of not having the available resources to complete your goals is anomie. He stated that people who cannot reach their goals with the means they currently have, may turn to deviant behaviors. An example of strain theory could be a person committing theft or fraud to compile money that they did not have prior. It may also be social media depicting people as needing better cars, houses, or clothing, so an individual turns to selling drugs to provide more money for those items. -allison tyndall

Labeling theory is the approach that people are "deviant" or "abnormal" because of these labels that society has put on someone or something. This theory focuses on the relationship between the "norms" and what is considered "abnorms" and how the actions of one is effected by this labeling a society has.

In my own word, control theory is the definition by itself of self-control over illegal or legal deviant behavior. The fear of repercussion of an individual to break rules or social norms, repercussions and sanctions can be heavy mentally depending on the actions and the age, within our main society there is many inside societies like social media have their own norms and beliefs so if a person is trying to break the norms and be deviant in the social media norms she will need to get ready to face the heavy sanctions like mean, ruthless comments, harassment, mockery, share and visioned by millions of people, career kill sometimes. Most young people are very "weak-minded" not that is bad but it's the reality, these sanctions are very heavy for our mental sake and feeling of acceptation in the society. If you feel threaten of being rejected by your society the spiral goes on and on so it's to my opinion what keeps people in check.

Of course I used the example of social media but there are much more heavy sanctions that can ruin your life if you don't follow the law like taking away your freedom, that is enough for somebody to have self-control.

In the real world we all are given labels as we start to decide who we really are. This labeling starts when we are just starting grade school and only gets worse as we age. Labeling theory is by definition "An approach to the study of deviance that suggests that people become "deviant" because certain labels are attached to their behavior by political authorities and others" -(Middens, Duneier, Applebaum and Carr) Pretty much what they are saying is you become they crowd you hang out with. If you are hanging out with a group of underage teenagers that consume alcohol, eventually, you will also conform to the group and underage drink. You will typically only conform if you do not negatively judge the group you are hanging out with. We can use this theory to understand that eventually the individual will conform to the group based off of their views and opinions.

We all have label someone or think a certain way about them just because the way they act or look. For example we might see a guy walking in the streets with dirty clothes and think to ourselves "oh look he's homeless" but in reality we don't even know if the guy just got out of work. We judged the guy due to his clothes.

Control theory is the view that people refrain from deviant behavior because diverse factors control their impulses to break social norms. For instance, the stress of going to college. Society makes it a very important factor that going to college is the main way to reach success in life. I know a lot of people that hate school, but they keep pushing to get the work done because they don't want to fail. You aim to get good grades because you don't want to
fail school and not get a degree, whether it's for yourself or you're doing it to impress others, mainly your parents.

We don't do it because we are afraid we will get in trouble and because morally we know it is wrong.
For example, if you were really upset at someone and want to beat them up you would decide not to do it because morally you know it is wrong and/or you could go to jail.

From my perspective, the control theory explains how we use self control to avoid performing actions of deviance. This is a way we control ourselves from reacting to situations with deviant behavior that can have a negative outcome; we use it to save ourselves from punishments and consequences these reactions can bring. An example would be a person having no money and an increased desire for food or materials, but their self control stops them from stealing because they know it is wrong and that they will suffer consequences.

As the name might hint at, Control Theory follows a line of thinking that humans avoid deviant behavior with self control. You can think of almost as mentally going through a cause and effect scenario in your head. If I do this will it be deviant? An example would be cheating on a test. If I cheat I may get a higher score but it is deviant and I might get caught. I do not want to get in trouble so I will not cheat.

The strain theory states that societies put pressure on people to achieve socially accepted goals.
People in the lower social class can feel frustrated trying to achieve their goals because they are put in a position where it is harder for them to succeed. That's why many people in poverty end up doing crimes. Society put pressure on them to succeed and they get desperate and feel like the only way they could meet their goal is through crime.

Labeling theory is when an individual or group of people are perceived by society because of something they have done. The crime or act that the person or group committed does not define who that person is and may not be something they do all of the time but people may make assumptions about that person's character based off of the label they have been given. For example, a person that is convicted of a DUI may be labeled as an alcoholic or person with a drinking problem.

This theory describes when a person or a group of people behave in a way that is deviant simple because it is what is expected of them. They typically would not behave this way however due to the pressure they feel to act out in a deviant way, they do so.

Emily is an autistic teenager. Since she was diagnosed at 5 to have high functioning autism, her parents has made excuses for her as far as her education and her interaction with other people.
