I believe engineering applies science, math, and technology to solving problems. Engineering is using materials, designing, crafting, and building – it helps us understand how and why things work.

It makes me uncomfortable because engineering is mostly asking students to solve problems. I find it challenging to incorporate these types of lesson when students need to spend time reading and writing.

Tallest paper tower challenge

I can have my HLA students design and build the tallest possible tower using nothing but paper and tape. I can add this into the new inventions unit. The tower must support a heavy weight at the top without collapsing! I think they would like to create this and I like that the materials are accessible.

Design and build your own balloon-powered car that will travel as far and fast as possible. This project can be added to a poem we read about a knight that decides to travel and conquest different parts of Spain to impress a king whom he also wants to ask for forgiveness for a crime he didn't even commit. Students can figure out how he could've travel faster with their invention.
