It's about kid that lives in a super small town, and he goes to a one room school that has 9 kids in it, and that grades 1-8. One day when he's riding his bike delivering newspapers he sees a face in the window of an abandoned house. When he goes to check it out the next day he meets a girl named April who is hiding out with her mom and brother because her father died in the army and a crazy guy is stalking her mom. So the kid brings them food day after day and becomes friends with April. Then one day he tells his teacher about them and his teacher promised no teacher to tell what he had told her. A few days later their are rumors that people were found and taken out of that house and when he goes back to the house them and all their stuff is gone. He sees a note telling him that they are nearby, so he goes to the other abandoned house and they are there. He then tells his mom about them and his mom agrees they could stay at their house, and his mom tells other people and soon everyone knows they are living there. But when he comes back to the house they are gone.
