This is because Caribbean countries were colonized by patriarchal European nations. Inequalities for women were common during the period of slavery, for both the whites and the enslaved.
             The African female was imputed not only the economic responsibilities when purchased as a slave but also to sexual duties and childbearing. The white men were peculiarly drawn to the exotic nature and charms of African womanhood, thus making them primary importance to the plantations. Europeans viewed African women as immoral and promiscuous. On the plantations, the enslaved women had the more strenuous jobs, as the had to work out on the field all day together with the other tasks assigned to them.

These changes lay in the material aspect of a gendered life. There is a recent trend in quick disappearance of conventional male-dominated departments of agriculture, engineering and manufacturing, this is a transformation at the national level. Women now have the right to vote, the right to education and the right to live life the way they want to. Her cabinet consisted of mostly male parliamentarians. "Gender inequality remains deeply entrenched in every society. Women lack access to decent work and face occupational segregation and gender wage gaps. They are too often denied access to basic education and health care," Minister of Justice and Attorney General Dorothy Lighbourne. Culturally, according to the Jamaican Observer, there is a high level of violence against women in the Caribbean.
From an early age, children are socialized into these norms and gender divisions. Their toys are usually sex-typed, for example, little girls are often given dolls and kitchen utensils while boys are given trucks and water-guns. In some countries of the Caribbean, for example on the Windward and Leeward islands, it is a common occurrence for boys to be waited upon by females resulting in their failure to assume domestic responsibilities. They were only in charge of the house itself, but when the white man arrived home, he would be in charge of the household, meaning that the woman would have to submit to whatever the man said/wanted. The women were seen as property to their fathers and when they were married, they were now property of their husband.
