In the poem called the Powwow at the End of the World, the author starts with small things and builds up to the climax at the end. The first line starts with “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and I shall after an Indian woman puts her shoulder to the Grand Coulee Dam and topples it.” This begins the fall and structure of the poem and also the plot itself. It builds and builds and then at the end it says, “ . . . I must forgive and I shall when I am dancing with my tribe at the powwow at the end of the world.” In the poem one thing leads to another, and in the end he brings it all together in the “powwow at the end of the world”. This shows the build of power and the things it creates in the end. In the article “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock”, it shows the power of two groups: the antagonist and the ones who are “taking a stand”. The antagonists are the ones constructing the pipeline. “ . . . permits for the projects were approved and construction began without meaningful consultation.” This shows that the group of people building this pipeline have enough power to go against others around them who may feel differently about their actions. This leads into the tribe that is conflicting with this building process, the Sioux Tribe. They show their power by protesting the build. “It is a spectacular sight, thousands of Indians camped on the banks of the Cannonball River, on the edge of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation . . .” They know that there could be dangerous consequences to their actions but want to show that they have just as much right as the builders do. They obviously have power because no one would have written about it if it wasn’t an impact.

In "Taking a Stand at Standing Rock", the idea of power is developed through explaining how the tribes must fight against such strong powers in order to protect what is theirs. David Archambault 11 explains how there is strength in numbers and strength in the idea of coming together as one to fight for what they believe. In the story it explains how the people with the money and influence are walking over the tribes, but with so many indians coming together, they have a chance. In the poem "The Powwow at the End of the World", the idea of power is also developed by showing how when one becomes many, there is a great strength. Sherman Alexie states that even though the world is ending, the man is dancing with his tribe, because he is surrounded by people who he is one with, they are not afraid, they are celebrating. Both the story and the poem express how even when it feels like the world is ending, (both metaphorically and literally), if you are surrounded by those that care for you and what you believe in, that is an almost unbreakable force.

In Sherman Alexie’s poem, "The Powwow At The End Of The World", elements such as the direction to forgive and the connection between nature and humanity develop the idea of power in the story. The direction to forgive is supported in the text through the repetition of, "I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after..." The connection between nature and humanity is developed throughout the poem as Alexie states how he will forgive. For example, in the first sentence of the poem he writes, "...after an Indian woman puts her shoulder to the Grand Coulee Dam

and topples it." As he continues, Alexie connects the Indian woman to fish, to bodies of water, to fire, and to the Indian tribe itself. In David Archambault II's article, "Taking A Stand At Standing Rock", he identifies elements of power through the tribe standing up for themselves, although they were outnumbered by powerful forces. This act can by supported in the article when Archambault states, "We are also a resilient people who have survived unspeakable hardships in the past,
so we know what is at stake now. As our songs and prayers echo across the prairie, we
need the public to see that in standing up for our rights, we do so on behalf of the
millions of Americans who will be affected by this pipeline." This shows the power that the tribe holds because they are resisliant and brave for protecting their given rights, despite the possible consequences.

The poem “The Powwow at the End of the World” and “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock” both have a combined message showing power and unity. In both of these articles, they talk about the power they have when together, and what unity can bring them. In Alexie’s poem he states, “I am told by many of you that I must forgive so I shall after that salmon leaps into the night air above the water, throws a lightning bolt at the brush near my feet, and starts the fire which will lead all the lost Indians home.” This quote shows that the power of the salmon throwing this bolt will bring everyone together, “all the lost Indian’s home,” and through this they will all be strong and powerful despite all the people telling Alexie otherwise or to forgive. In Archambault’s article, he talks about the issue of the Dakota pipeline where he says, “It is a spectacular sight: thousands of Indians camped on the banks of the Cannonball River, on the edge of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. Our elders of the Seven Council Fires, as the Oceti Sakowin, or Great Sioux Nation … The Sioux tribes have come together to oppose this project,” shows the incredible tribes all there to stop a pipeline, and if they had not all come together, for none of them would have the power to protest the pipeline’s occurrence. In both articles, they discuss how powerful everyone is together, and without their unity, they would no longer have the power they once possessed.

In the poem “The Powwow at the End of the World”, and the article, “Cherokee Nation Seeks to Send First Delegate to Congress”, the main idea is to try and spread awareness about how Native Americans do not have enough rights, or able to put any input on topics. In the poem it talks about how the Native American, if they come together and take a stand they could be very powerful. For example in the poem it quotes, “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after that salmon swims through the mouth of the Spokane River as it meets the Columbia, then upstream, until it arrives in the shallows of a secret bay on the reservation where I wait alone”. When I saw this in the poem, I thought that the salmon was a symbol for the people coming to help and fight for their justice and power. In the article it takes a different approach by talking about a more efficient way of taking a stand and gaining more power for the Native Americans, by electing a delegate to enter into the congress on behalf of the Native Americans.

In “The Sacred Spell of Words”, the idea of power in the passage is developed through words and language. In the passage when asking the question of “what is power?”, N. Scott Momaday says “Surly power is what it is- that which enables us to influence, if not determine, the course of our lives… And it is a word… Words are powerful.” Words are able to create feelings, serve as symbols, touch our sensibilities in different ways, and change your view on the world, which is powerful. In “The Powwow at the End of the World” the element of nature shows power in the story. Alexie says “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after the floodwaters burst each successive dam downriver from the Grand Coulee.” This shows the power of nature on the world or on a society, which has a great effect. These two ideas of power are different because the ideas of power are developed differently throughout the stories.

They need power to fight for what is theirs. This is similar to the New York Times article, “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock” because the article tells about the little power that the Sioux Indians hold and that the government has more power than them. These articles are different because in the poem, the protest for power is spoken through words such as, “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after an Indian woman puts her shoulder to the Grand Coulee Dam and topples it.”

In the New York Times article, the protest for power is spoken through actions, as the Sioux tribe “camped on the banks of the Cannonball river” to protest against the building of the oil pipeline.

In “The Powwow at the End of the World” written by Sherman Alexie, Alexie develops the idea of power by using the first line of his poem to show that one thing can be so powerful and impactful that it affects every single thing that comes after it. The first line of the poem reads, “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after an Indian woman puts her shoulder to the Grand Coulee Dam and topples it.“By the woman leaning his shoulder on the damn, countless event follow which all negatively impact the Native American tribe. If the woman were not to have lean on the damn, then all of the events that lead to the end of the world would not have happened. Alexie uses the woman's leaning to show that a single action can have so much power. On the other hand, in “The Cherokee Nation Seeks to Send First Delegate to Congress” written by Jose A. Del Real, Real uses the importance of representation in government to develop the idea of power. In the article Real writes, “Dan Lewerenz (Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska), a staff attorney with the Native American Rights Fund, said seating a Cherokee Nation delegate would be an important step toward more Native American visibility, and be celebrated cross tribes.” He uses the importance of government to show that having a Native American delegate will lead to the Native Americans gaining more power, because they had never had a delegate in Congress and by having one they will have more power in the decision making that will affect them.

In the poem “The Powwow at the end of the World”, Sherman Alexie ties you in emotionally to get the point across. He uses real life events to describe the hardships of what is happening to the Indian Tribes. In the article “The Sacred Spell of Words”, Scott Momaday tries to define the power by involving events from past history to describe the word. For example, Momaday uses the Holocaust to help understand the article more. Both poems give insight to real world events to describe power. These two pieces of work give great detail of what Power truly means.

First, in the poem, Alexie shows power when he keeps forgiving and that leads to a good time with all of the Indians telling stories. Next, in the article, power is shown by the government and the company when they started constructing the 3.7 billion dollar pipeline. In the article, writer, Jose A. Del Real talks about the limited representation Native American tribes have in Congress. Although there are many tribes awaiting recognition with many followers, congress falls short and has only four representatives. ‘ The Powwow at the End of the World’ uses repetition of the line: “ I am told by many of you that I must forgive... “ to show that the Native Americans are frustrated and upset about the loss of what they had. It shows that they are ready to forgive once things are returned and that others are resentful but are ready to move on.

In “Powwow at the end of the world”,power is developed by the speaker throughout the entire poem when saying that the Native Americans will forgive the big companies if the people in power give them their river back and remove the damn so they can get back to normal life with their tribe and not be worried about what will happen to their sacred land. When Sherman writes “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall when I am dancing

with my tribe during the powwow at the end of the world.” this shows that they will keep fighting the power to keep their land and not have it taken by the outside world. Secondly, in “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock” it says “Drew Wrigley, has threatened to use his power to end this historic, peaceful gathering.” This shows that the governments/big companies are trying to use their power to threaten the tribes and make them surrender their land for building. The Native Americans said that they will be pushing against the power to stop them from building on their homes.

In the poem “The Powwow at the End of the World,” power is shown by cause and effect. The beginning of the poem starts with the Alexie saying that many people “told [him that he] must forgive” and he will after an Indian woman breaks the Grand Coulee Dam. By the end of this poem, the river emptied into the ocean and the salmon swim to meet him and teach him how to dance. Power is shown by small actions- and “by small and simple things, great things are brought to pass” (Alma 37:6). A woman puts her shoulder on the dam, then it is destroyed and empties out. However, in that article, “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock,” Archambault shows that power is in numbers. As the Dakota Access Pipeline is being built, Native Americans and people living in the nearby land have protested against this project. Archambault recalls that “the Sioux tribes have come together to oppose this project.” People have come together in large numbers, hoping that their voice will be heard in order to reclaim what they are losing.

In the poem “The Powwow at the End of the World” Sherman Alexie’s idea of power is developed throughout the poem. Alexie shows at the end of the poem that the world is ending but the tribe is still dancing and living life until they have no more left to live. “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall when I am dancing with my tribe during the powwow at the end of the world”. His idea of power is staying strong with your tribe until the very end. The idea of power in In the article,“The Sacred Spell of Words” N. Scott Momaday says that words can develop ideas in you like “the word ‘power’ denotes force, physical strength, resistance. But it connotes something more subtle: persuasion, suggestion, inspiration, security”. Momaday says language is powerful and words are sacred. Momaday and Alexie both day that power is strength with yourself or your tribe it’s security and you feel safe when you are powerful.

Power is developed in “The Powwow at the End of the World” because Alexie is repeatedly saying he will forgive when events that will never happen occur, for example, in the poem, “The Powwow at the End of the World”, it states, I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after an Indian woman puts her shoulder to the Grand Coulee Dam and topples it”. This shows how Alexie’s power is established because he is saying that he will forgive people when they restore all the things that have been taken away from his tribe. Later in the poem, “The Powwow at the End of the World”, it states, “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after we Indians have gathered around the fire with that salmon who has three stories it must tell before sunrise… another story will make us laugh for hours; the third story will give us reason to dance”. This shows that once Alexie and the tribe are happy and dancing, they will forgive. This asserts their power of holding back their forgiveness until they are satisfied and have what they should. Power is developed in “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock” because the Tribes continue to protest, but the builders and officials have all the power. In the article, “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock”, it states, “...federal law requires the Corps of Engineers to consult with the tribe about its sovereign interests, permits for the project were approved…”. This shows the power that the builders have over the tribes because they do not even consult with them. Later on in “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock”, Archambault II states, “... time and time again tribes were ignored when we opposed projects…”. This also shows how powerful the builders are because they can ignore and listen to whoever they chose. The power in “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock” is different than in “The Powwow at the End of the World” because in “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock” the builders have all of the power and the tribes try to protest, but it is hard. In “The Powwow at the End of the World”, the power that Alexie holds is strong because instead of protesting actions, he is protesting everything that has been taken away from them.

In the poem "The Powwow at the End of the World", Alexie uses repetitive grammatical structure
to send a powerful message about what the tribes have experienced. By referencing the "floodwaters burst each successive dam", the author demonstrates the power needed to forgive. In a way, his almost sarcastic tone allows the reader to understand the lack of care the government has towards the Indians and the losses they endure. Ultimately, Alexie suggests that the Indians will not get what they want until the "world ends". In the article "Taking a Stand at The Rock", Archambault describes how the "power" that man-made
environmental disruptions had on the Sioux tribe. For example, when the government built a dam in the Missouri river, he explains that all of their land, crops, and riverfront forests had been taken from them. Using a similar tone as Alexie, Archambault also talks about how
the government shows little to no respect about the Indian reservations. However, he uses a more detailed account of past events to better emphasize what has happened to his people. By using alternative writing styles (repetitive phrases vs. specific historical events), both articles use different grammatical styles to illustrate the meaning of the word power.

In taking a stand at Standing Rock, power is developed by showing that all of the executives don’t care about the tribes or farmers using the clean water or land. “Many of us have been here before, facing the destruction of homelands and waters, as time and time again tribes were ignored when we opposed projects like the Dakota Access Pipeline”. While in the poem “The Powwow at the End of the World” written by Sherman Alexie, the connections between the tribespeople develops power. “I shall after we Indians have gathered around the fire with that salmon who has three stories it must tell before sunrise: one story will teach us how to pray; another story will make us laugh for hours; the third story will give us reason to dance”.

Comparing: Like the article “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock”, the poem, “The Powwow at the End of the World” focuses on the intoduction of power from disaster. In the article	by David Archambault II	, Archambault says, “The Sioux tribes have come together to oppose this project, which was approved by the State of North Dakota and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The nearly1,200-mile pipeline, owned by a Texas oil company named Energy Transfer Partners, would snake across our treaty lands and through our ancestral burial grounds.” This quote tells the reader that many tribes from across the reigon have come together to protest a pipeline that wil destroyed most of their homes. In the poem written by Sherman Alexie, Alexie says, “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after

that salmon leaps into the night air above the water, throws a lightning bolt at the brush near my feet, and starts the fire which will lead all of the lost Indians home.” This quotes explains that even though the authors homes were destroyed in the flood, the only thing he can do it forgive. These quotes symbolize power by telling their readers that even though they have or going through tough times they will forgive and forget and move on to better things.

Contrast: These two article are different because of there situations

The idea of power in the poem starts off like any power story, it starts small and builds itself up. In the poes it all starts when, “an Indian lady puts her shoulder on the Grand Coulee Dam and topples it.” In the article the power starts when two people sign a paper, a very simple thing to do. In both cases more and more things begin to happen to increase the consequences severity, from rising waters to a dead fish in the poem and in the article, multiple councils made to represent a minority. In both cases power starts from something very simple and leads to something greater, rather it be food or a voice, it had a great effect for the people.

In Sherman Alexie’s “The Powwow at the end of the world” the idea of power is developed by embracing the mighty journey and power behind waters, rivers, and creatures within these waters. Alexie writes “I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after the floodwaters find their way to the mouth of the Columbia River as it enters the Pacific and causes all of it to rise…. I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after that salmon swims upstream, through the mouth of the Columbia and then past the flooded cities, broken dams and abandoned reactors of Hanford.” In “Cherokee nation seeks to send first delegate to congress” by Jose A. Del Real the idea of power is developed through discussing the history and power of treaties as well as the power that can be provided for the native Indians by having a person in congress.

In the article “Taking a Stand at Standing Rock” it speaks on the problems Indian nations to this day struggle with against malpractice of those around them. An organization under the name of Energy Transfer Partners wants to run an oil rig through treaty land, ancestors burial sites, and the Missouri river which a lot of people use for a site of clean water. A federal law requires that they would have to speak to the tribe about what they would like to do but no consultation happened and building began. You could say that the tribes would have to face adversity against this big organization trying to go against them. Likewise in the poem “The Powwow at the End of the World” Sherman Alexie states “after that salmon leaps into the night air above the water, throws a lightning bolt at the brush near my feet, and starts the fire which will lead all of the lost Indians home. I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall”. This shows all the things it would take for the indians to forgive and that they will not forgive that easily.

In both the poem, "The Powwow at the End of the World" by Sherman Alexie and the article, “Cherokee Nation Seeks to Send First Delegate to Congress” both talk about desire for power, rights, and unity. In the article Jose A. Del Real explains the little representation that Native Americans have within the government. The four representatives are far less compared to other represented groups. In “The Powwow at the End of the World”, Alexie emphasizes upon the Native American’s strong desire for equality. The line “I am told by many I must” portrays resentful emotions towards those who disagree with their equal rights. Ultimately the line suggest they must be the bigger people and unite under unfortunate circumstances.
