The Spectros T-Stat Model VLS 2.0 is a continuous tissue oximeter. This device detects early tissue ischemia. A white LED light is used to illuminate the tissue in the capillary bed, which then captures the tissue oxygenation rate on the monitor. The new 2.0 model was designed in 2020 to make it more durable, have improved data information, and to have a battery versus wall plug in for easier transportation.

PROS: 1.) The T-Stat oximeter can monitor tissue perfusion without causing harm to a newly placed flap. 2.) Real-time oxygenation levels of the tissue is readily available. 3.) There is opportunity to have the oxygenation results from the machine sent directly to the surgeons phone to keep them informed on flap quality.

CONS: 1.) The T-Stat machine can be costly. 2.) The machine will need some sort of continuous power source. 3.) The new use of the t-stat machine in a facility will require staff education and resources.

I choose to do my current innovation on the T-Stat machine because we currently use this machine at my job. We use the T-Stat oximeter for our DIEP flap breast patients. Patients come up to the floor from surgery with this machine being used, so their flap is being continuously monitored. We use the T-Stat Oximeter because of its accuracy, which leads to better patient outcomes. The T-Stat oximeter gives the staff and surgeon a good representation of flap quality.
(See Reference for Citation)

As a nurse providing care for DIEP Flap patients, I have found the T-Stat oximeter so helpful with patient care. Being able to see the oxygenation rates of the flap in real time aids in the assessment of my patients. Surgeons also receive continuous updates on the oxygenation levels, which keeps them informed. An invention like this is so important because flaps can be rejected by the body. So early detection of ischemia in a flap is crucial for good patient outcomes.
