Conception begins with a sperm cell from a man who is fertile. This sperm swims up through the vagina into the uterus. The sperm joins the woman's egg cell and travels down the fallopian tubes to the uterus; furthering the process of fertilization.

The fertilized egg advances down the fallopian tube and begins division from two cells and progresses into even more cells as division progresses. A week after the egg is fertilized, the egg continues onto the uterus and becomes a growing cluster of cells called a blastocyst.

The blastocyst eventually attaches itself to the endometrium, or the lining of the uterus; this is known as implantation. Estrogen and progesterone (hormones) are then released. This causes the endometrium to become thicker. This thick substance contains nutrients the blastocyst need to grown to further develop into a fetus.

Cells divide as some eventually turn into a baby while forming nourishment and oxygen supply to the setting called the placenta. Hormones are released that allow the body to signal the growth of a fetus. The hormones that are released are also used to maintain the lining of the uterus rather than shedding. This may result in a late period.

After implantation, usually the woman notices a missed period that month. What makes it extra difficult is that other common conditions like hormonal changes or sickness can cause similar symptoms; causing pregnancy scares.

A study done gathered information from 702 women. They found that 234 of these women had sample reported a pregnancy scare during the study. This study ended up with 49% of the women reporting a scare; yet, most people who partake in sexual-activity have an experience with pregnancy scares.
