Common Comfrey grows as high as 1.5m. Its flowers are 12-18mm long, tubular-bell-shaped, purple, pink or white. The edges of the flower are slightly upturned as 5 tiny lobes. These flowers are in branched, coiled clusters and are borne on erect, hairy, stems with down-pointing, tapering hairs & wings which continue from one leaf axil to next. The upper leaves are clasping, oval and hairy. The basal leaves are large, oval-lanceolate, stalked, untoothed and softly hairy. It grows in damp grassland, by riverbanks, waste ground and on marshes. It is a scattered perennial, probably introduced and belongs to the Borage family.
Comfrey leaves have small prickly hairs on the leaves and stems that can cause skin irritation. It is worth wearing gloves and long sleeved shirts when handling.

Ideally in sandy well drained soil, but can be sown in a container as an annual. All parts of the plant can be highly toxic, particularly the seeds, a good idea to remove the deadhead fluffy bloom before seed sets.
Blooms and colours better in full sun but can be grown in partial shade.

I would plant this in a container off the patio out of reach from people. Routine pruning of ramblers

When supports have been covered, thin and shorten excessive growth by removing one in three of the oldest stems entirely
If space is restricted, prune out all stems that have flowered and tie new ones in to take their place
Finish by shortening side shoots by about two-thirds

Renovating overgrown ramblers

Remove all dead, diseased, dying and weak shoots
Cut some of the old woody branches to the ground, retaining a maximum of six young, vigorous stems that can be secured to supports
Saw away any dead stumps at the base of the plant, where rain can collect and encourage rot
Shorten side shoots on the remaining branches and prune back the tips by one third to one half, to encourage branching
Give pruned plants a boost in the following spring by spreading a granular rose fertiliser over the soil and mulch them with a 5cm (2in) layer of garden compost or well rotted manure

Choose sideshoots as cuttings, pulling these away from the main stem with a thin strip of bark, or heel, still attached.
This heel is important as it is where the roots of the new plant will develop. Trim off the small flap of excess bark with a knife.
Remove the lower pairs of leaves so that the cutting has a length of bare stem that can be cleanly inserted into the compost.
Dip the cut end of each cutting into rooting hormone (Rhizopon Chryzopon Rose 0.1% was used for softwood). Insert several cuttings around the edge of small pots of gritty compost (I used a mix of compost and coarse sand at 60/40).
Water the compost well then cover the whole pot with a clear polythene bag to maintain a humid atmosphere around the cuttings.
