Everyday Life in the Thirteen Colonies

The instructional purpose of this lesson is for my students to learn about some of the social and economic aspects of living as a colonists in one of the 13 colonies. For their learning tasks they will complete a worksheet based off of a Flocabulary video, and write a short personal narrative about what their life would be like living as a colonist. Formative assessment will include a quick Q & A, listing information on an anchor chart of what my students already know about the reasons people traveled to make a new life in the colonies and what hardships and challenges they met there. I will conduct a reading of If You Were A Kid in the Thirteen Colonies, followed by a Flocabulary video and Liberty Kids video as well. My planned supports include asking scaffolding and reflective questions, and replaying the Flocabulary video several time, as it does run at a very fast pace.

You did an excellent job pairing the reason your family left for the new colony with your chosen colony of New England. Many people did leave their homeland for the New England colonies for that reason. Additionally, you included some very good details about day to day life. Here are some questions that might help guide you to including more details in to your daily life as a colonist: What crops did you help your parents grow? How hard was it to work? How long did it take to see food grown for your table after all that work? You could even include details about the religion your family was given trouble over the ultimately led them to the decision to move to the New World. What details that you have already written about would you like to learn more about so you can include them in your narrative? Lastly, where could you go to look for more information on those details?

I thought that you made a very creative choice to write your narrative in the form of a letter. Many letters were indeed sent back and forth from the colonies to their families and friends in their home countries. Although you did cite a reason for moving to the Middle Colonies, you did not match it to one of the reasons we learned during our read aloud, and videos. I would like you to think back to those reasons that were cited and choose a reason that best fits your letter during your editing. Also, "colony" is one of our vocabulary words. When writing, remember that if you are unsure of a spelling you have your three column notes that you can refer back to as a tool as you practice learning the correct spelling. Also, I feel that you have several opportunities to expand upon your details and really put the reader right with you in the Middle Colonies. First, which state of the Middle Colonies did you move to? What kind of medicines are coming on the ship that is on its way to you? Lastly, you can describe the difficulty and time that was required to get the water your family needs. Consider these ideas when you come back to editing this piece. Nicely done so far!

I really enjoyed reading your narrative. Of all the details that I have read so far, you were the only one to mention taxes as the reason your parents left. I liked how you named the actual state you moved to, although I would still like to see which of the colony groups you are in listed somewhere in here as well. You made this narrative very personal by including some of the hardships your family has faced. Storms that tear up and ruin crops was a real danger in the unpredictable weather of the New World. As I read this, I felt your hardship and misery. Your last line filled me with a great pity for you and your family. It spoke volumes about how life was really like back in colonial times. It was very well done. For your edits, I want you to check your spellings yourself and see if you can catch two of the spelling errors I did. For the first one, you need only look to your three column notes to assist you. Here are some guiding questions that might help you with even more details in your edit: What types of crops are you planting with your seeds? How will your work help your family survive? What other things must your family do to get food while your crops are growing?
