Walt Whitman was one of the most influential poets of American history. From an early age, he was largely influenced by democratic ideals. In his youth, he discovered his passion for literature, and he used this passion to advocate against the major issues of his time period. For example, he became the editor of the Crescent in 1848, where he was exposed to the reality of slavery in southern states. Because of this, he grew concerned over the future of the nation with the splitting issue of slavery, prompting him to begin writing poems. His first publication was a collection of poems named Leaves of Grass which attempted to connect with the common man in America.
After the Civil War began, Whitman traveled to Washington DC to take care of his wounded brother. He stayed there to work in hospitals for eleven years. Later on, Whitman continued to work on his poems until he died of pleurisy.
