In particular, he researched a strategy called "Two-by-Ten." Here, teachers focus on their most difficult student. For two minutes each day, 10 days in a row, teachers have a personal conversation with the student about anything the student is interested in, as long as the conversation is G-rated. Wlodkowski found an 85-percent improvement in that one student's behavior. In addition, he found that the behavior of all the other students in the class improved.

I listen to what has happened that day and answer questions that aren't directly related today's topic.


    During breaks and lunch duty, I walk around and speak to students about how they are doing, what is coming up and just general conversations. This is good to connect with students who no longer have my classes.

    Instead of asking about what they did over the weekend or during vacation, I focus on their plans for the upcoming weekend or holidays. This shift encourages more engaging and forward-thinking conversations. And I feel we built connection on every single “Cultural Friday”
