Their Uncle Ross tells them so they didn't get scared about Nat and Zeely Tayber. They rent the west side of Uncle Ross's field for their prize hogs. When they see Zeely for the first time they're shocked she is about 6 1/2 ft. tall. Geeder the older sister believes that Zeely is a queen when she finds a picture in a magazine of a Hatutsi woman which looks extremely similar to Zeely. One day Zeely comes by and gives Uncle Ross a message for Geeder. Zeely wants to meet Geeder at the woods. Geeder begged for her little brother Toeboy to come but Uncle Ross said he probably shouldn't come. So Geeder went and her and Zeely sat for awhile and Zeely told stories about how the Hatutsis came and how her Grandma was a Hatutsi woman and in her blood she was a Hatutsi. They were moving up north to Ohio. They were to live in the big house called The House of Dies Drier. This house has multiple tunnels that slaves used to hide in when they fled from the south. There were also some people who didn't like the fact that the Smalls' were moving into the old house. They were named the the Darrow brothers. They would mess up the Smalls' house and confuse them. Many people thought the house was haunted; nobody would live there because there were "ghosts". This actually turned out to be someone named Mayhew. He lived in a cave with his sick and elderly father named Mr. Pluto. Mayhew, Mr. Small, Thomas, and Mr. Pluto wanted revenge on the Darrow brothers for wrecking the Small house. They planned there revenge for a long time; they bought costumes and masks. On the day of the plan, they got dressed in their costumes to scare the Darrow brothers. She was sort of a free thinker and African Americans weren't supposed to be back then. The other main characters were papa, grandma named Big Ma, TJ (who lies, and talks a lot and also dies in the ending because to boys beat him up and broke a few of his rib bones and jaw and might be sentenced to death it dose not say but i felt bad for him because he was set up, and the kids of papa and mama were four kids their names are stacey the oldest boy, Cassie a girl, Christopher-John, and the youngest they called Little Man. The story took place in 1931 when discrimination and segregation was the way life was then for African Americans. They did not have the same rights as white people. The book deals with conflict between white people and the African American people. It was amazing to me that this is the way white people treated African Americans. The book was really good, but also sad. It had a lot of history in it, but our history is sad when we don't treat people equally. The first thing they do before they get to the farm is change their names. Elizabeth was now Geeder and John was now Toeboy. When Geeder gets to the farm she has a spark of interest of a tall women named Zeely. For Geeder, competent, self-possessed, six-and-a-half-foot Zeely Taylor becomes a romanticized idol. They moved to Ohio into the house of Dies Drear, a white abolitionist from the time of slaves. Many believed that the house was haunted. This house has many secret passageways to discover and explore! The house also has a creepy caretaker named Mr. Pluto. 
When the Smalls moved in, another family, the Darrows, immediately hated them. Thomas and his father immediately sense there is something wrong with Mr. Pluto. Meanwhile, the Darrows keep breaking into the Small's house and messing things up. 
Nearing the end, they discover that they have been encountering 2 people, the real Mr. Pluto, and his son pretending to be him. Mr. Pluto's son was pretending to be him because the real Mr. Pluto was sick, and they couldn't let the Darrow brothers know, or else they would come and find Dies Drear's treasure that Mr. Pluto was keeping safe. If the Darrows found it, they would mess it up. When the Smalls figured out what happened, they formulate a plan to prank and scare the Darrows. Thomas, his father, Mr. Pluto, and Mr. Pluto's son, Mayhew, pretend to be the ghost of the slaves that supposedly haunt the house of Dies Drear, and the ghost of Dies Drear himself. They all scare the Darrow boys practically to death. The Smalls finally settle in their new house, joyous and content.

She has a sister named Willie. Natalie, a girl in Dreenie's class, has leukemia. Dreenie has a friend named Tuli as well as Willie and eventually Natalie. Since Natalie has cancer she has to have chemo and that made her look "Bluish", and that is what people call her. "Bluish" doesn't have hair because of the chemo. Dreenie and Tuli try and stay away from "Bluish" but they can't help it when all of them get put in the same group for a school project! When doing the project they bonded and all became best friends!
