Atticus says the defense has "circumstantial evidence." What does this mean?

Not all evidence is equal. If someone sees you commit a crime, that person's testimony could be good evidence. But circumstantial evidence asks us to draw conclusions because the cold hard facts aren't there. For instance, Mayella had hand marks all around her neck. That tells us she was choked. Does that prove Mr. Robinson was the one who did it? No, that's the inference Mr. Gilmer is asking jurors to make.
- MW

What's different about Mayella compared to the other Ewells?

Mayella actually tries to look decent and wear nicer clothes than the other Ewells. She did her best to separate herself from the rest of her family as much as she could. She did not come to the courtroom in dirty farming clothes, she wore a dress and wanted to be proper in front of the courtroom. This shows that Mayella understands that her and her family are at the bottom of the white social pyramid, but wants to distance herself and look like a model citizen.
 -CB

He treats her poorly and he is most likely the real person that beat her up after seeing her with Tom Robinson. Even though this was wrong to do during this time period she shouldn't have gotten treated like that. Her father also said she screamed like a pig, and if you actually treat your daughter right you don't call her a barnyard animal.
-AA

Mayella and her father, Bob Ewell, have a very abusive relationship. Mayella has no choice but to stay with him. Because the Ewells are very poor, no one wants to be associated with them. This leaves Bob Ewell to be the only one Mayella has. Bob clearly exemplifies his disrespect to his daughter when he refers to her, in front of a packed court room, as a squeeling pig while Tom Robinson apparently "raped her" .
-SB
