1953 Ethical Standards of Psychologists

The first Code of Ethics was published in 1953. The code included over 310 rules and was 171 pages in length. The first version was created by a committee that reviewed over 1,000 incidents submitted to the APA, and included input from over 2,000 Psychologists. A summary of the principles of the code were published for the public, which you can view by clicking on the PDF above. I learned about how this code was constructed through various articles, but best summarized here : http://www.apa.org/monitor/jan03/firstcode.aspxhttp://www.apa.org/monitor/jan03/firstcode.aspx

The APA has many sets of guidelines for many different types of professions and practices in Psychology. Click the box above to learn more about specific guidelines. Take note that along the right side of each link to a set of guidelines is the year in which the guidelines are scheduled for review. The expiration date ensures that they stay current and relevant "not to exceed 10 years, for which the standard or guideline will be effective if it is approved along with a rationale for the proposed timeframe." More about how guidelines are governed are found in the APA bylaws here: https://www.apa.org/about/governance/bylaws/rules-30

Over the past 5 decades, the code of ethics has become more robust with the addition of guidelines more specific to individual areas of practice and research. The addition of specific guidelines has allowed professionals to apply the more broad ethics directly to their practices through more specific guidelines. The guidelines are simply more current and frequently revised. Read more about the distinction of ethics and guidelines by clicking the box above, along with an overview of the beginning of the ethics creation which all started with World War II and an uprising in the profession.

Shockingly, shock therapy is still in use today! The APA supports Electroconvulsive Therapy as a last resort for behavioral modification. Many states have banned it with rules that are more restrictive than the APA Ethics and Guidelines. Are you as shocked as me to find this out? Read how this was used on children at the Judge Rotenberg Educational Center here until 2020: https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-care/decades-long-fight-over-electric-shock-treatment-led-fda-ban-n1265546

As of 2018, there are 6 states that have not banned ECT: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28991068/
