How would policies such as those around Stolen Generations affect how local Noongar people may choose to engage with government funded health strategies? What are some strategies you have learnt previously that you would consider implementing in your own practice to create more culturally safe health services? by Ari ALDUS

Government funded healthcare is very Western, and doesn't have much room for yarning and time to sit with clients to really understand what they need. In future practice when working with Aboriginal people, I would consider less formal meeting places or times, rather than in an office sitting down it could be a chat on a walk in the park. Where ever the client feels comfortable to talk I would try to make that possible for them.

I find success when the conversation is not too strict or formal, and I am able to create understanding through general conversation. I also find that sometimes things just happen at any time! sometimes a family will be in town and they will be aiming to address their appointments which does not necessarily align with the modern appointment based system. Time and place are important and should be flexible and tailored to the situation and person.
