Information literacy is the ability to evaluate, locate, identify, and effectively use information. In today's world, there is so much information that we need to be able to make sense of and to navigate around, especially in the digital age. In the Eisenberg Vodcast, he says that information literacy is a process of following the steps over and over and this is what we want our students to be able to do utilizing the Big6 or Super3.

Why is it important to teach Information literacy skills in K-12 education?

It is important to teach information literacy skills in the K-12 classroom because there is so much for students to understand and learn about finding information on the internet, especially in the digital format, there is so much that needs to be known and we need to know how to properly use the information that we find on the internet. Knowing what is relevant and how to apply the information is very important as well as using tools appropriately and knowing what is real versus fake information. There is so much information on the internet that it is important to know how to go through the information. In the article from CommonSense.org the author said “students who are looking for information online-particularly for their schoolwork - conduct an oversimplified search that leads to millions of results”. Reading this made me really think about how there is so much out there and we have to know how to search for the correct information.

The Big6 is a six-stage model that helps make decisions about online information or solving problems. Here are the six stages:

Define the information problem

Determine the best possible sources of information

Locate and find information in the sources

Engage and extract the relevant information

Organize and present information

Judge the product and the process

The Super3 is the simpler stages of the Big6 used for younger students and Eisenberg describes them as:

Plan (What are you supposed to do and what sources are you going to use?)

Do

Review (Look back and review)

How will you use the Big6 and Super3 to teach information literacy skills?

I will use the Big6 and Super3 to teach information literacy skills to my students by first choosing which model would be best for my students. Eisenberg says to just start small and use the vocabulary, labeling what we already do (10:44) . I would then create lessons teaching each stage in depth and then have students practice so they know how to use each stage. There is so much information out there that students need to know how to go through the process of figuring out what are the best sources of information to use. The Big6 website talks about how we are pushing our students more and more and moving faster and faster to get things done but we need to teach our students to work smarter, not faster.
