Charlotte has a gift with horses and wants nothing more than to dedicate her life's work to such. While at the orphanage, Charlotte meets Hayward, her dear friend that was often teased for her large ears and homely appearance. When Hayward get adopted, Charlotte knew that she had to do something drastic or risk being stuck working at the orphanage forever. Charlotte flees the orphanage disguised as a man in order to be able to obtain jobs and make an independent life for herself. Charlotte, or Charlie as she becomes, successfully leads a life as a male, which awards her many opportunities and freedom that she would not have obtained otherwise.
“Riding Freedom” is part historical fiction because Charlotte is based on a real person in the 1800s, Charlotte "Charley" Darkey Parkhurst, that, after escaping an orphanage, chose to live life as a male. However, it brings about an important contemporary realistic fiction nature in the way that the story focuses on the theme of gender identity. It is not known if Charlottle’s reason to live life as a man stemmed from personal gender identity that differed from the one assigned at birth, the fact that being a male gave her freedom that would not have been there as a female or some other reason.

The year is 1952, during the time of Jim Crow Laws. As the family leaves their town and head south, they immediately start to experience the racial hatred of the times. They are turned down at gas stations bathrooms, restaurants, and hotels even when they have the money to pay. After sleeping in the car and eating only the food that was packed from home, they finally meet a man that directs the family to look for an Esso gas station. They are told that they will be helped there. Upon reaching an Esso gas station, the family is given a Green Book that was famously started by a man wanting to help black travelers find places that will not turn them down. This Green Book inspires Ruth to give a little herself.

As very young children, they were forced to leave Somalia due to the civil war. They lost their father and contact with their mother during this time as they fleed to Dadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya. While there, they just want the war in Somalia to end so that they can go home and be able to find their mother. Fatuma is an older woman that signed up to be the boys’ foster mom. She cares for them as a mother would. However, she is older and Hassan lives with a disability. The only word is can say means “mama” is Somalian. He has seizures, and the doctors in Dadaab are unable to help him. When Omar receives the opportunity to attend school, he is hesitant as he knows he needs to care for his brother Hassan. However, he attends school and studies hard to pass exams to excel to the next grade levels when many are left behind. Omar dreams of one day being resettled by the United Nations to America, a land views by the camps as a place of richness and opportunity. Omar does everything in his power to study hard and hopes to one day get his chance.

At an early age (3 years old), he had an extreme interest in music. He saw the music in his mind and already knew he wanted to play the violin. His first toy violin was a great disappointment. Shortly after frustrations with his early toy violin, Polio swept through Israel. Itzhak was hospitalized but was one of the lucky ones to survive. He had to relearn many body functions, but never fully regained the strength in his legs. Therefore, to this day Itzhak is still using supports to walk. Young Itzhak did not let his braces get in the way of his desire to perform the violin. While musicians are expected to stand, Itzhak realizes that he is not on stage to stand or walk but to perform his violin. He does just that as this story takes you through the performances and beautiful accomplishments of Itzhak.

Inquisitive Glory quickly notices how things around her and in her Mississippi town are changing. She soon finds out that there are no repairs being done on the pool. The pool closed to make sure that no one other than whites used it. Glory befriends a girl named Lora visiting from the north. This friendship opens Glory's eyes to racial injustice, so she writes a letter to the local paper, requesting that the pool be reopened. While Glory gets a small glimpse into the massive hatred and evil done during these times, her new perspective drives an old friendship away. Glory stands up for what she believes in at a time when many others around could not relate to those feelings.

The book begins with Henry as a young boy but quickly fast-forwards to his adulthood. Unfortunately, slaves were not allowed to know when they were born, so the exact age of Henry is unknown. This book received the "Coretta Scott King" award for the illustrations, which brilliantly capture the most important details of the story on each page. I checked this book out in print from the school library in which I work. The literary elements are weak and the vocabulary is simplistic, but this format truly allows you to focus on the details seen in the illustrations. This book is appropriate for 2nd-5th graders. It would make a grade read aloud or quick text in which to gather some significant historical context surrounding slavery.

Esperanza is introduced as a child and 12-year-old girl growing up as the daughter of a wealthy landowner in Mexico. After tragedy strikes, she battles with internal conflict from forced change, discrimination, worker's rights, and the pain and suffering from losing a loved one to having to be responsible for supporting loved ones.
