Element 19: Helping Students Practice Skills, Strategies, and Processes

This element refers to students practicing and understanding content. This means that once content has already been introduced, students will practice in order to deepen their understanding of the new content. The purpose of this is that students will learn to use this new knowledge on their own.

Strategies:

There are multiple strategies listed under this element. I feel like these strategies are ones that can be used and adjusted to work with any age group. They can also be done as a whole group or in a smaller group setting.

1. Close Monitoring: This occurs right after the teacher teaches new content. This is when the teacher is observing and correcting errors that the student is making with the new content.

2. Frequent Structured Practice: This is when students are given multiple chances to solve problems. This works wells because the students have a high probability of success.

3. Varied Practice: The students are given more complex situations in which they have to use the new skills they have learned. Students will still achieve success but they are more challenged by this process.

4. Fluency Practice: This is something that should only be done after students have been successful in both simple and complex situations. This is because students have become comfortable with the material and are now able to focus on accuracy and quickness.

Many of these strategies include repetition and repeated practice of skills in order to help achieve mastery of the concept.

Technology can be used in various ways to enhance the learning that is happening while using these strategies.

This can be done through the use of online websites or games that allow for practice of a specific skill. This can also be done with various videos that re-enforce the skill that was taught and help the student to practice the knowledge. This can also be done through online quizzes or Google classroom where students can answer questions in order to show the knowledge gained.

A few tips when using these strategies:

1. Remember that many of these concepts have recently been introduced to your students. Allow time for processing and practicing before expecting mastery.

2. Don't forget that fluency practice should only be done to increase speed and accuracy, once the student already has the knowledge down.

3. Lastly, remember to scaffold your practice pieces based on student's abilities and achievements.
