In 1878 the U.S signed a treaty for the establishment of naval station in Pago Pago Harbor. On Sept. 29, 2009 the samoan archipelago was shaken by an undersea earthquake of magnitude 8.3, centred some 120 miles (190 km) to the south in the Pacific Ocean. Founded on and by June 14 1889 American Samoa's strong faamatai chief system is said to originate from two early female chiefs, Nafanua and Salamasina.</div>]]></description>
