Suzanne Conlon Module 1I currently use a site called Manga high for assessment in maths. This site allows children to log in individually and complete set tasks set by me. I can then log in and see where children are having difficulty, lets say time or money, and set new tasks for that child to aid and support this learning. Its a fantastic resource.

I think both Socrative and Kahoot are clearly effective for
History and Geography assessment, but I also feel they would be helpful with
regards English assessment particurly in relation to a novel. Children could
answer short quizes based on a chapter read silently or for homework etc.

My understanding of portfolios and eportfolios is that the child is continuously collecting work samples and evidence of learning that he/she is proud of. It is a working record of learning, one that is continuously being added to and something for the child to demonstrate his/her abilities and display his/her accomplishments.

I have never used the tool before this but I think it would be a fantastic sharing tool if the class were doing a project on a topic such as Italy. When the children have complete the initial brainstorming stage of KWL method, I would have the children research differing aspects that we would like to include in the project. I think padlet would be an amazing forum for each child to post their gathered information and share their research and learning with each other. It would also afford me the opportunity to see who is actively researching their given topic.

I love the idea of using Edmodo for starting a book club in the classroom and encouraging literacy at home. I would also use Edmodo for Gaeilge lessons, where I could set the pupils questions and they respond in Irish. I thinks its an amazing tool for differentiation as the smaller groups and folders allow for privacy and support for children who need extra help. The Quizzes also allow for great assessment, and the mobile app means that fieldtrips can be accessible.

A learning activity which i feel would incorporates the 3 functions/phases of ePortfolios: Storage, Workspace and Showcase, would be based on the First Steps approach to Procedural writing. Initially I might set the class a task of completing a 'How to..' Guide. In pairs or individually children would choose a procedure they would like to document. In the eporfolio function of storage, the pupils would store and collect suitable images, research and other files which will support their procedural writing task. In the workspace function, they would write, create, collaborate, communicate, receive formative feedback from peers and teacher based on their 'How to..' piece. And finally, in the showcase function, as a group the class will puplish their collection of procedures.

In my school we have a similiar initiative where each month, classes are given the task of creating a piece based on a certain genre; recount, narrative, report, etc. I would love to see eporfolios being used to promote this in my school. I think edmodo would be a fantastic way to do this.

During this course so far, I am increasingly impressed by the accessibility of the online tools. Ive really enjoyed using padlet and I was wowed by tools such as emodo, socrative, google docs, etc. I absolutely intend to use these tools for storage, workspace and showcasing as I can see how beneficial they are for creating home/school links, collaborative work, promoting self-esteem and pride in the childs own work, formative as well as self assessment and developing ICT skills.

I really like the idea of all three aplications, Quizizz, Socrative and Kahoot for assessment in my classroom. I like that Socrative has an android app, and that both Socrative and Quizizz display the answers. Also for Quizizz you don't need an account which is handy. These tools are fun and entertaining ways for the children to revise and recap on a topic, as well as allowing the teacher to ascertain the level of learning based on the topic. I would like to use these tools to make a quiz for Gaeilge based on the téamaí, where the teacher may display for example a piece of BIA AND THE CHILDREN MUST NAME THE ITEM, OR DISPLAY A PICTURE AND THE CHILDREN MUST CHOOSE THE CORRECT SENTENCE IN GAEILGE TO DESCribe what is happening in the picture. I also think they are fantastic tools for literacy and numeracy quizzes as well as the SESE subjects.

Considerations to consider for successful implementation of eportfolios might be; creating a collaborative environmant with colleagues, where you share ideas and resources. Nourishing self assessment and peer assessment. Ensuring that the teachers feedback is formative and constant. Informing the parents and letting them know how they can get involved.

I was particularly interested in the internet safety considerations in this module. Last year, having seen the idea on a CPD course last summer, I introduced a class Twitter account to my class. Based on webwise considerations and information I had learned on the course, I begin by approaching my principal to ask if I could open the Twitter account and explain its purpose. I then sent of an information letter to parents expaining that this account in nature was to share links of learning, photos and games based on work we had done in class. I would also post art work, songs, news such as student of the week, etc. I told parents that if they were happy for their child to be involved, they must sign a consent allowing their child to have their photo taken and be posted on the account during tours etc. I also outlined the conditions for the account being that the account was a private account. Only parents could follow the account, no cousins or aunties etc. Parents were not allowed to comment on posts or share posts. All of the parents in the class agreed to the account and I found it to be a great way to forge home/school ties.

I did however learn from this module that I should not have used my own email to set up the twitter account as this could have left me open to unwanted attention. I also saw from the module with regards using the tablet, to have the children use the same tablet or ipad over a number of weeks, something that I will definitely take into consideration in September. I now plan to assign the children to one ipad for the year ahea. Also I must check more frequently the apps the children have been looking at.

What were the key learning points of the course for you?The key points of these course for me were the benefits of using ICT to support assessment. Also, how to use online tools to support assessment. Another key point was how to use ICT and eportfolios to support assessment. The role of eporfolios in supporting a child with SEN. Copyright considerations and internet safety. How to set up an eportfolio and how to plan for the integration of ICT for assessment. How can this knowledge be applied to your teaching when you return to school in September? In September, I feel like this knowledge will hopefully make me a more reflective teacher. I think previously I relied heavily on summative assessment but I seen now how incredibly influential formative assessment is and I hope to really work hard on giving continous, directional, positive and helpful feedback. What are the main challenges that you need to be prepared for?The main challenges I need to be prepared for are that the teachers in my school are not currently using eporfolios and by their nature, eportfolios need to be collaborative and effectively planned for so this will take getting use to. Also i think getting parents on board will take time. What are your next steps in relation to the use of ICT for assessment (and/or ePortfolios)? I think my next step is looking at how I can implement eporfolios in my class. I would like to use edmodo, padlet and scoilnet to help me too do so. I will need to speak to my principal and colleagues to discuss how we as a school could effectively become proficient in this area of assessment.
