Today we had a peak into Guadeloupe’s carneval culture and music. Our teacher, William was fantastic and he taught us to play Caribbean rhythms with drums. At the same time we got good basic information about local music culture. Drumming is something I haven’t probably tried since my own high school days and I enjoyed it a lot. We danced, sang and played together. Most important lesson with drums was that music is something you create together. You get strength from other people. Sometimes it is good to just let go not to think that much. :) The Street art photo I chose for today is from Sainte-Anne and it is related to topic very much.

Today was a very emotional day for me. To hear the rythm by singing, clapping the hands, playing the drum and to hear how the others play the drums. Music is something what touches you. The different sounds cause different emotions like happiness or sadness for example. But music is also a possibility to connect people-it is a language of everybody!
Our classroom near to the beach was a wonderfull place for this experiance-thank you!

Today we learned how to play the drums and in connection to that we learned about the carneval in Guadeloupe. The carneval starts on the first of Janurary and goes on for about three month. Our teacher William explained everything very well and it was a great expirience for me to join him and the group in playing the drums with support from Michelle. Playing the drums, singing and dancing to the drums gave me good vibes. Thanks for that. I really enjoyed it :)

Today we learned about the essential role that music has in our cultures. Many different cultures also share similar music traditions. Here in the Caribbean, carnivals and music are an important part of life, and here people play, sing, and dance to themselves more than to perform. We learned through our experience today, that the rhythms we played really brought us together, and allowed us to feel relaxed and happy, thanks to our very sensitive and encouraging teacher William and our trusted driver/drummer Michel. I can't really find words to describe the feeling when drumming on the engaging rhythms with the whole group, surrounded by coconut trees and watching the blue Caribbean at the background. We drummed, we sang and we danced, to our own pleasure and together. The slogan of our organisation in Finland is just that, "for yourself, together". Is this where the power of music lies: that it gives a sense of belonging and of creating together, while also being a strong personal pleasure and tool to express all feelings?
I remembered this quote from Rabindranath Tagore, which sums up our fantastic day: “The same stream of life that runs through my veins night and day runs through the world and dances in rhythmic measures. It is the same life that shoots in joy through the dust of the earth in numberless blades of grass and breaks into tumultuous waves of leaves and flowers.”
Merci!

,,Dance what you are" - that's the quote of the day for me. Gwo Ka is the new music for me and it is special because of this main function: in one hand - to be the part of the music and in another - to express yourself without thinking about others through the dance. Several times during being together with teacher Wiliam I thought what being together in the music is like being together ir the class, in the school, in organization. Everywhere is very important to feel the rhytm, to be in it, or to come back in it when you get lost.

Today our activities were integrated with music. Music that is born out of a sense of natural rhythm, the blending of a person with a rhythm and the expression of one's emotions. Everything happens rhythmically in life, the human body also works rhythmically, and everybody feel own heartbeat. Music lets you express all the sounds you hear and feel, rhythm gives them a clear form. Music brings together people of the same culture, helping each other feel and be in communion. Music opens up other forms of culture - singing, dancing. Music helps a person to express his emotions, to reveal himself, and also unites a group of people. The Lithuanian people, who got together by the Television Tower in 1991 January 13, defended the independence of the state by singing. The powerful force of song and faith that united the nation stood up against the Soviet tanks.

Today we learned about the Guadeloupian „Gwo Ka“ in a wonderful surrounding - a beach garden. Music brings people together - in every culture, no matter which language people speak or where they are from. William is a brilliant teacher who taught us not to give up and always to go forward to achieve something. To mark time doesn‘t help, thus we have to move to achieve something in our lives or to just find ourselves. This is also how our identity and culture works. It is fluid, it is moving.
Thanks a lot to William, Rita and Michel for the wonderful day!
