This shows how nonchalant the King is about issues such as who is running an entire army and who is still alive. That isn't a great quality for a king leading a glorious country. This is why I believe Nikolai should be king. Mal begins to think that Alina doesn't have the same feelings for him as he does for her because she is flinching. Alina is flinching because she continues to hallucinate that the Darkling is there in the room. A simple miscommunication that is leading Mal and Alina apart.
