"I was grateful when we passed into the protection of the city walls." Pg. 214
She was grateful for passing through the walls because the pilgrims might riot and make a mess. This shows how she feels for the refugees, and it isn't a comforting one.

" 'You have deserted your post and directly disobeyed the orders of a commanding officer. That is a hanging offense.' ... 'Very well. ... You will be dishonorably discharged.' " Pg. 221 - 222
This shows how nonchalant the King is about issues such as who is running an entire army and who is still alive. That isn't a great quality for a king leading a glorious country. This is why I believe Nikolai should be king. He has first-hand experience with the First Army and knows how to run a group of people.

" 'No chance,' I replied. ' The king would hear one whispered 'Sankta (Saint) Alina' and have my neck in a noose.' " Pg. 236
EVIDENCE FOR THE LAST: The king has so much power that he can decide whether someone will live or die if someone says a simple phrase. This shows that he is uncontrolled with his emotions and that is not good either because he could immediately become angry and go on a rampage order a whole town killed.

" With hesitating steps, we complied, keeping a respectful distance from the princes. " Pg. 217
"With hesitating steps" stands out to me because it makes it seem like Mal and Alina seem like they are frightened by the princes or they are nervous to be seen in front of the king again.

"It was the first real emotion I'd ever seen her display." Pg. 218
This tells that the queen is very straight faced normally, and that she probably doesn't enjoy being in the Court because she doesn't show anything and is probably bored out of their mind.

With the topic that Alina and David are talking about, I could believe that David would be nervous with Alina holding powerful weapons and David being a potential traitor.

"Again, I sensed that pull, that emptiness at my wrist." Pg. 287
It seems as though Alina and Mal and probably Tolya and Tamar will go searching for the firebird and the final amplifier will be applied to her wrist as a height and climax of the series (Probably in the next book). Or the amplifier could be forced upon her by the Darkling.

"I squeezed my eyes shut." Pg. 328
Mal begins to think that Alina doesn't have the same feelings for him as he does for her because she is flinching. Alina is flinching because she continues to hallucinate that the Darkling is there in the room. A simple miscommunication that is leading Mal and Alina apart. I don' t know what Mal is going to do, because he said that he was done and walked away.
