Stimulus

Being three girls, we were inspired by the media and other songs and there depiction of women. We thought that it's very common for men to be talking sexually about women however there's a strong stigma around women and what they can talk about. So were decided our stimulus was going to be this and our anger towards this situation. We decided to write our song about a girls' infatuation and desire for a man they love and break up the stigma and stereotype that women can't talk about the same things in songs that men do. We were inspired by Latin music for this approach to our song as Latin music is written and used for people to let our their emotions and frustrations, which is a strong emotion we were feeling about this stimulus. Similarly, Reggae music is used by groups of society that are overlooked or feel as though they have no voice, for example in the 60's when Reggae was becoming popular it was highly associated with Rastafarians due to how much it helped them (an overlooked and outcast group) to express themselves. So we were also inspired by this genre and it's hard hitting and blunt styled lyrics to write this song.

Creating the Music

Since we didn't have that many instruments and all three of us were mainly vocalists, we needed the guitar by itself to sound catchy and have a bouncy rhythm. So I was inspired by Reggae music to play chords on only the off beats to created a bouncy and syncopated rhythm and just play muted strings for the on beats. This was a very effective technique as it turned simple chords into its own, unique beat. We also wanted the song to be quite slow so we could enunciate the lyrics as they were the key part to getting the message/stimulus across so I was inspired by Reggae to play at a low tempo. The keyboard was added in too because we wanted slight instrumental sections which would've been boring if there was only a guitar playing. Again, because we didn't have that many instruments we needed the keyboard to be simple but effective and catchy to work. Therefore, we were inspired by Celtic music to use the Pentatonic scale when creating the keyboard riff. We wanted it to be a bouncy riff rather than just chords as I was already playing chords on the guitar so adding singular notes would've given the piece more dimension. Also, we wanted the notes to be played on the higher pitched part of the keyboard to compliment and be heard over the low pitched chords of the guitar.

Creating the Lyrics

We wanted these lyrics to be blunt and tell a clear story and be graphic in their nature, this was inspired by a lot of Celtic Folk and Blues music and fits well with our stimulus and theme. If the lyrics weren't blunt and instead we'd written in vague metaphors, there wouldn't be the same impact on the listeners/audience and the message we want to get out (that women can say and act the same as men do in music and they shouldn't be put down for it) won't come across successfully. We were inspired by Gospel music a lot for the chorus (which links with our Blues inspiration as Gospel evolved from early forms of Blues music). We use the religious terminology of "sin" in the song and this links to Blues as Gospel songs are sung in Church and other religious places. Another feature that's prominent in Gospel music is layered harmonies and we use them in the chorus for an angelic and powerful effect. Also in the chorus, we use a repetitive call and response technique that was inspired by early forms of Blues music (work songs) as they contained this feature a lot. This repetitive aspect makes the lyrics in the chorus easy to remember and stick in people's heads which is what we wanted so people think about our song more and think about the implications of the song/the message we want them to understand. We also used a lot of abbreviated words and common slang like "cause" and "gonna" which was inspired by Blues rock music and gives the song a down to Earth feel as it's common language most people use. This worked to our advantage as it implies that what we're talking about should be viewed as normal and common and not frowned upon and viewed as taboo. We wanted to keep a typical Western Pop/Rock styled structure so we have a repeated chorus and verse sections as well as a bridge. However, we were inspired by Blues and Celtic Folk music to add variation to the song so we made sure that the second verse was very different to the first by changing the melody around and also using all three of us as vocalists at different points of the song to get tone variation and letting everyone sing the different parts in their own vocal style. This created a structure that felt new and had a lot of different sections whilst still having a repeated chorus. We also wanted the intro to the song to have some vocals but we didn't want to be saying any words so we sang "ah"s instead which we were inspired to do by Celtic Folk styled music and also we added layered harmonies to this section which we were also inspired by this genre to do. This gave the start of the song more depth so it wasn't just the guitar playing by itself and also gave the listeners/audience a taste of the main part of the song (which is the chorus) as that part also has these layered vocal harmonies.

Final Video/Performance

I think this performance worked well and the Reggae styled syncopated beat worked really well and gave the song the right bouncy feel. I think the vocals were strong and the vibrato and ornamentation gave the song a cool and Blues feel and gave the verses the variation we wanted. The vocal harmonies during the chorus sounded great and the call and response worked well however I think the repeated parts during the chorus (sung by Jessica on the keyboard) could've been changed for the final chorus to make it have more of an impact. For example, she could've sang the notes one octave higher or changed the melody to give it a more final feel. Also, the harmonies in the beginning section of the song (the "ah"s during the intro) needed perfecting more as they were slightly off pitch so the harmony wasn't achieved. The drum beat that was added during the end bridge section was good and gave structure to the instrumentation however it could've been pushed and made more complex to give the song a better Reggae feel to fit more with the guitar. For example, instead of the beat just being a simple first beat rhythm, we could've tried a One Drop drum pattern which is typically used in Reggae music yet it's still simple enough to play in an acoustic song like this and it not be too overpowering. I think my favourite part of this piece is after the chorus, when there's an instrumental section with the syncopated guitar chords and the catchy keyboard riff paired with the repetitive line "cause turning you on is my favourite pastime". I think the keyboard riff works well with the guitar and the higher frequency notes sound great alongside the low guitar chords.
