Indian visual arts were first discovered in primitive caves or rock paintings. There paintings usually depict animals and scenes of human activities in the ancient times such as hunting. The paintings of the Ajanta Caves are the most significant early Indian paintings.

Indian paintings provide an artistic variety that covers from the early civilization to the present day. The paintings have evolved from being basically religious in purpose to a fusion of various cultures and traditions. They are also classified as murals (large artworks done on the walls of solid structures) and miniatures (paintings that are usually done for books or albums or drown on paper or cloth.

Islamic paintings are very much different from that of the Southern region of Asia. Islamic paintings usually pictures of elements of repeated geometric floral and plant designs known as arabesque. Arabesque is usually used to symbolize the supreme, united, and endless nature of God. Islamic art usually focuses on the description of patterns and Arabic script, rather than on figures, because Muslims believe that the depiction of the human form is idolatry, the worship of a physical object as a god and thereby a sin against God which is forbidden in the Qur'an.
