Since the late 1900s when the U.S. came into being as a world super power, and especially after WWII when our economy boomed, the U.S. has gained a reputation as a benefactor to the poorer nations of the world, and have assumed the responsibility of providing for less fortunate nations during periods of tumult and suffering. For instance, after the severe Haitian earthquake in 2010, the U.S. provided food, water, sanitation services, rescue services, and emergency shelter. Since we are capable and have the financial resources, it is the responsibility of the U.S. to care for nations that are less fortunate during trying times.

It is the responsibility of the U.S. to provide foreign relief, because how could we live with ourselves if we let others suffer? To know that so many women and children are in another nation, starving to death and we don't care would be intolerable. It would make us cold-hearted people to allow that to happen.

Pathos- this is an appeal ot pathos, because it tugs at the readers' heartstrings, and makes them feel bad for not wanting the U.S. to help poorer nations.
