         <description><![CDATA[<div>DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ETHERNET AND TOKEN RING.<br><br><strong>TOKEN RING</strong>: is defined as the local area network which has the properties to transmit the node only when it has certain pieces in succession that come from the other successive nodes turn by turn.<br><br></div><div><strong>ETHERNET</strong>: is defined as the system used for connecting various computers to form a local area network and has different protocols to ensure the passage of information takes place smoothly.<br><br></div><div>An important distinction between the two topologies is that “<strong>TOKEN RING</strong>” is a token-passing system in which only one workstation can talk at a time. It has to be in posession of the token in the packet; no one else is supposed to be able to talk until their turn comes<strong>.&nbsp; ETHERNET</strong> is a Collission Sense Multiple Access/Collission Detection (CSMA/CD) topology.&nbsp; This means that if multiple workstations start talking at the same time, they will all shut down, wait a randomized period of time and then start up.&nbsp; What is theoretically supposed to happen is that one workstation will start talking before the others do, and the remaining worsktations will see that someone is talking and remain silent until the current talking workstation has finished. If the vendor of the system you are looking at supports full-duplex Ethernet, you can be looking at a theoretical speed of 200M bit/sec.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>ETHERNET:</strong>&nbsp; is a system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network, with protocols to control the passing of information and to avoid simultaneous transmission by two or more systems. With high speed, low latency and end to end communications. Also Systems using Ethernet communication divide data streams into packets, which are known as frames. Frames include source and destination address information, as well as mechanisms used to detect errors in transmitted data and retransmission requests<strong>. WHILE</strong>&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>TOKING RING</strong>: a local area network in which a node can only transmit when in possession of a sequence of bits (the token), which is passed to each node in turn. Also <strong><em>Token Ring is a </em></strong>&nbsp;local area network (LAN) technology is a communications protocol for local area networks. It uses a special three-byte frame called a "<strong><em>token</em></strong>" that travels around a logical "<strong><em>ring</em></strong>" of workstations or servers.<br><br></div><div>&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>ETHERNET</strong> supports a direct cable connection between two network interfaces cards by the use of a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable">crossover cable</a> or through <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_MDI-X">auto-sensing</a> if supported. WHILE <strong>TOKEN RING</strong> does not inherently support this feature and requires additional software and hardware to operate on a direct cable connection setup.<br><br></div><div><strong>TOKEN RING</strong> eliminates collision by the use of a single-use token and early token release to alleviate the down time<strong>. ETHERNET</strong> alleviates collision by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_sense_multiple_access">carrier sense multiple access</a>and by the use of an intelligent <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch">switch</a>, primitive Ethernet devices like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_hub">hubs</a> can precipitate collisions due to repeating traffic blindly.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>With Token Ring, as the name suggest, a free token passes around the network. If a station wants to transmit, it receives the free token, discards it and replaces it with its own data frame. When a station then receives that data addressed to it, it marks the frame as received and passes it back out onto the network. The frame is received back at the originating station where it discards it and then releases a new free token onto the network.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Ethernet uses the CSMA/CD specification which stands for "Carrier Sense, Multiple Access / Collision Detect". When a station wants to transmit on the network it first 'listens' to the cable until it detects a quite period where there is no traffic on the network. At this point it will try and transmit its data. If another workstation has also detected the quite period and transmits at the same time you get a collision, and both stations have to wait a random ammount of time before retrying. Waiting for a random time allows one of the workstatins to retransmit first.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Token Ring devices are often quite a bit more expensive than the ethernet equivalent due to the cost of the extra logic the boards need to have as well as having to have MAU's or CAU's etc.<br>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;Ethernet is available at speeds of 10, 100 and 1000mb/s. There are many tools, utilities and various suppliers of devices for ethernet, whereas the choices for Token Ring are much more limited.<br>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;Token ring was more resilient than a coaxial/BNC cabled ethernet network, but UTP with hubs and switches etc these days mean that the cabling can be much more fault tolerent. So assuming that when you talk of ethernet, you ARE talking about UTP structured cabling and not the older coaxial cabling which is prone to noise and failure (a break on one cable segment brings all stations down on that segment) ethernet should give more resilience and easier upgrade/expansion as well as higher speed options.<br><br></div>]]></description>
