In the 1900 woman's clothing wasn't supposed to be comfortable. They had morning, afternoon, and evening dresses. Corsets were very popular.  The clothing was designed to show off their tiny waist line and be a perfect fit. Their goal was to have the S silhouette to show off. Hats were the main accessories. They were worn with all outfits. They weren't small they were huge and very broad and detailed. The American fashion was inspired by the Europeans especially dresses. They had tons of lace and embroidery. This was fashion for woman in 1900.

By 1910 the clothing has completely changed. People started designing clothes with a looser and dresses were made without corsets. They also started making clothes that didn't need a corseted figure. Instead of dresses woman wore skirts more. Skirt and dress hemlines became shorter and higher and then rose above the ankles. Some woman still wore hats but others started wearing turbans. In 1910 clothing became comfortable.

In this year another style started of cutting your hair like boys yet they still wore hats. There were newer accessories like beaded necklaces, pins, rings and brooches. This year dresses changed and became long and elegant and backless. Hollywood was a big influence in this year. Woman wore two different dresses kind of like the 1900. They wore a day dress and a night dress. The day dresses were short and bright the night dresses were metallic, sequins, and beads. In this year clothing also became more comfortable and gave woman more freedom so they could live their busy lives.

This year was the start of world war two. There was a strict ration on fabric, because of this dresses and skirts became shorter. In the 1930 they ended mid-calf but after ten years they stopped at knee length. With the invention of shoulder pads woman’s clothing took a masculine militant look. The shoulder pads made a boxy or square neckline. In this year woman went for the wide shouldered, slim-waisted, narrow-hipped silhouette. By the late 1940 woman started wearing more colorful dresses. February 1947 was a very important day in fashion history. Christian Dior’s first collection released, it was called the “New Look”. The New Look had rounded shoulders, exaggerated bust lines, wasp waists and padded hips and long full skirts that required an excessive amount of fabric. Many people didn’t like this look. This was fashion in 1940.

The 1950’s fashion made one of the biggest comebacks.  Pencil skirts and poodle skirts were quite popular. In the early 1950’s poodle skirts and a white blouse with black and white shoes were quite popular. This style was mostly for younger women. Housewives wore dresses with swing skirts. These dresses had a tight fitting waist and a loose skirt. Pencil skirts were worn by older women. Cat eye glasses were a popular accessory. During the late 1950’s America was filled with glamour. In this decade an art form called pin-up girl and it was later turned to an actual style.  To complete this style you needed black winged eyeliner, full red lips and filled in eyebrows with high arches. Women still wanted a small waist so corsets were still worn. Many trends of this decade were created by teens. Some of these trends continue to live. Many woman started wearing looser fitting dresses that didn’t show off their figures too much. Another thing this year brought were shorter skirts. Miniskirts were introduced in this decade. Capri pants and drainpipe pants were also quite popular. The first woman Jackie Kennedy was a great fashion icon. Some trends that were started by her were cropped jackets with boxy silhouettes and oversized buttons. This decade might have the most colorful and bright clothes.

Women’s clothing was made with very bright colors and long flowy skits and pants were also worn by them. As years passed it was normal to see women wearing pants and they were spreading wider and wider. These pants were soon turned into bell bottoms. Some accessories that were worn were choker, dog collars and other necklaces. In the mid 70’s many women started wearing suits. This was supposedly the disco era.

The 70’s and 80’ were very different. Everything changed from dresses to fabric to hair and color. Clothes went from being incredibly bright to lighter colors like brown, tan, beige and pale orange. Turtlenecks and silk blouses were quite popular. More pants were sold. Most were high-waisted, pleated or comfortable. In the mid and late 80’s bright neon colors were popular again. Makeup got brighter and hair could be dyed. Some accessories were big hoop earrings, bracelets and hair bows. The early 90’s were a continuation of the 80’s. Many women wore denim, button down shirts, neon colors, oversized sweaters, black leather jackets, baby doll dresses, fake fur, and t-shirts. The mid 90’s fashion included turtleneck shirts, lace blouses, hippie-style floral dresses and gypsy tops. Some accessories were conch shell necklaces, straw hats, wedged heeled platform shoes knee high boots and dolly shoes. Woman wore pastel colors in the late 90’s. Musicians were a big influence in fashion. Black leggings with oversized sweater, low heel shoes, flannel shirts, denim everything, t-shirts, sweatpants, skirts, Birkenstocks, solid colors, silk shirts, turtlenecks these are some common clothes. Many things that were considered cool in the 80’s were bad. As the years passed fashion was starting to change again. The grunge look faded away and glamour and tight fitting clothes were worn again.

Women’s fashion change a lot in this decade. Denim was very important in the early 2000’s women wore denim miniskirts, Burberry, sweatpants, daisy dukes, shirts, ponchos and denim jackets. In the mid 2000’s women wore skin fit jeans with knee high boots. Other clothing items women wore in the mid 2000’s were yoga pants, trench coats, Capri pants and leggings. A lot of fashion trends and styles were taken from the 50’s, 70’s and 80’s. Some clothes that were taken from these years were the skinny jeans, bell bottoms, tunica, baseball jackets and denim print leggings. Some popular colors in this decade were neutral shades, sober colors and other colors like blue, pink, brown and neon green. Even though many women wore skinny/ tight jeans last in the 2000’s loose pants became popular. Wearing sporty clothes were a trend. Colorful accessories and jewelry and glasses completed your look.

Fashion is very different from what it was in the 1900. Many fashion trends and styles were taken from the past. For example women still strive to have a tiny waist. Many musicians and actors still influence fashion. What you wear said a lot about you if you wear designer clothes you are probably rich and if you shop at thrift store you’re probably not that rich. Clothes are a way women express themselves. They still wear things like leggings, t-shirts. 2015 and 2016 are really just a continuation of the style in 2010.
