Critical Evaluation:

Tiddalik is a small mischievous and very thirsty frog who appears in one of Australian’s best known Creation Stories. It is found in many parts of Australia, however the way Tiddalik’s story is told at Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre is a version that belongs to the Gunnai Kurnai people of Gippsland. This story was published in Youtube on 16 September, 2019. It was created by Isobel Knowies, produced by Kate Philips, illustration by John Patten, Narration by Uncle Herb Patten, Sound and Music by James Cecil. The narrator of this story Uncle Herb Patten is musician and an incredible and passionate gul leaf player. He is a respected Aboriginal Elder within the community who has connection to Gunai/Kurnai, Yorta Yorta and Wiradjuri people. This is resource is created with the consultation of Elders in the community as Uncle Herb Patten participated as narrator. In the museum Victoria website the nouns was properly used in the description part of the video and no Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples are pictured.

AITSL Standard:

This resource is links to Standard 1 Focus area-1.4: where teachers use strategies to demonstrate board knowledge and understanding of the impact of culture, culture identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. As this resource teaches children about the values of Indigenous culture about the importance of our environment and the preciousness of our water resources.

Curriculum elaboration:

This resource can be used for children age 3-5 years old. Children can engage and become socially responsible and show respect for the environment (The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia, Learning Outcome, 2009, p.29). This is evident when children develop an awareness of the impact of human activity on environments and the interdependence of living things.

Theme- Reciprocity:

One of the lessons children can learn from this resource is the value of Elders and the importance of listening to our Elders. In the Youtube video the traditional custodian of Kombumerri, Uncle Graham Dillon, speaks about respect and obedience to the Elders in the family (Protocols for Art and Instruments, 2020). Harmony and balance were important aspects of Aboriginal life. The principles of reciprocity and responsibility are fundamental to Aboriginal culture and are the basis of its interlocking life spaces. The responsibilities and obligations of each member of the group bind them together in a cohesive social unit. In the above story, the importance of sharing and not being selfish was highlighted. Australians are slowly becoming more aware of the importance of Aboriginal values related to the land. Throughout history, Indigenous people have taken their relationship to the land very seriously. Through ceremonies, the protection of sacred sites, or demonstrations for land rights, their feelings and responsibilities towards their land are highlighted (C Bourke; E Bourke, 1995, p.53).
