Mulan embodies self reliance by going against the norms of her society and listening to herself ("Trust thyself") instead of everyone else in her town who told her she can't join the army because she is a girl. "We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents." She didn't let her society's norms stop her from joining the army and achieving happiness. By pursuing her true passion and steering clear of society's obstacles, Mulan ended up being successful due to believing in herself. The quote, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." is parallel to this idea.

Socrates- A great person who was misunderstood

Socrates was misunderstood in his time because he encouraged people to think differently than they were used to, and to question the existing order, which made people feel uncomfortable. People saw him as a threat because they thought he was trying to teach people false information. The authorities executed him for "corrupting the youth of society." However, his contributions ended up benefiting society in the long run, by causing people to think outside the box and to not be afraid of being different.

Fight Song- self reliance song

The song "Fight Song" is all about being true to yourself and not caring about what anyone else thinks. The lyrics "And I don't really care if nobody else believes me" shows that she doesn't seek anyone else's approval or validation for her actions, which connects back to the essay's main idea of not worrying about society's expectations and finding happiness within yourself.

Chris Mccandless embodies these principles in the essay by not listening to society's negative thoughts about his journey, and continuing to achieve his own personal goals regardless. He stays true to himself and his morals by not conforming to society's standards. He realizes that the only way he is going to be able to pursue happiness is from within, which is why he chooses to ignore society and accomplish his dreams.
