Here is the question : Can you use your Sony WH1000XM4 Bluetooth headphones on a plane either wired or wireless ?

In a general sense, most of us would not encounter issues using wireless Bluetooth headphones on flight. That said, some airlines and airline regulators don’t allow using any Bluetooth devices on flights.

For example, Air Canada allows Bluetooth headphones only after the plane has reached an altitude of at least 10,000 feet. However, if the headphones are powered by a battery, the battery must be removed.   

And while some airlines allow using Bluetooth headphones during the takeoff and landing, some will ask you to switch them off.

It is unhelpful that the standards for wireless devices are sometimes ambiguous or not consistently enforced as an industry-wide standard process.

On the majority of flights, it is possible to use Bluetooth headphones. This means that we can anticipate using our Sony Noise Cancelling Headphones WH1000XM4 to enhance the in-flight entertainment experience or suppress cabin ambient noise.

Bluetooth headphones are similar to Bluetooth keyboards in that they are considered short-range Bluetooth devices. The interference caused by short-term Bluetooth devices on aircraft is small, thus their use is generally permitted.


How do you use the headphone for the in-flight entertainment ?

In-Flight Entertainment Systems typically have a 3.5mm headphone jack in the armrest. To use your Sony WH1000XM4 Headphone wirelessly, you will need to connect a Bluetooth transmitter to the headphone jack and pair with your headphones.

Alternatively, you can simply connect your headphone via the standard 3.5mm audio cable to the aircraft's entertainment system. Do note that all the useful functions of WH1000XM4 including its noise cancelling would be deactivated in wired mode. It will simply function as a regular headphone.
