Billedet er farverigt, hvilket er et typisk tema indenfor ekspressionismen. Det giver billedet liv og skaber en festlig stemning, hvilket også passer til billedet, da det viser en jazzmusiker. De tydelige farver i hans ansigt kan være en fremvisning af lyset der skinner på ham, da opmærksomheden højst sandsynligt er på ham. Farverne kunne også symboliserer følelser som  Jazzmusikeren besidder. Den orange farve symboliserer begejstring, mens den blå farve symbolisere styrke og visdom. Denne visdom og styrke kan udtrykkes i den musik som jazzmusikeren spiller. Billedet er vist i et frøperspektiv, hvilket understøtter at manden viser en styrke og overlegenhed. Hans øjne kigger også opad, hvilket kan sige noget om at han er knyttet til en højere magt der giver ham styrke og visdom. Der er også et lille skær af grøn i hans ansigt, der nok har til hensigt at vise, at jazzmusikeren har noget håb. Dette kan igen knyttes til at musikeren er knyttet til en højere magt der giver ham håb og at musikken giver ham dette håb. Billedet er dynamisk på grund af den måde farverne er blevet lagt på billedet.
