The title of the novel and a name the characters are called by is Insurgent. This phrase means to challenge or defy a government but not to intentionally wage war. This Veronica Roth chose this word to identify the characters by because they were challenging the government's leaders-the Erudite- but didn't instigate the conflict between them. The term Insurgents has also been used to identify other causes in real life, such as the Insurgents in Iraq who are fighting the new Iraqi government that was imposed upon them.

During her endeavors, Tris is faced with difficulty at every turn and made several decisions that could endanger her own life. In the book Tobias’ opinions about tris are presented even though he isn’t the narrator. The line “It’s not brave, choosing the position you were in yesterday. It’s beyond stupid—it’s suicidal. Don’t you have any regard for your own life?” shows his standing in the situations where Tris risks her life. In the series Tris comes from the faction where selflessness is priority, as does Tobias. When Tris risked her life, he finds it unnecessary because these times she is doing things that if done completely alone she would most likely die. The author uses the wording” Don’t you have any regard for your own life?” in this situation to add to the gravity of their situation and how Tris tries to solve them, and how Tobias handles the risk.

Lets look away from the characters in the story and focus on the actual problem presented in the series. In the end of the book on page 523 the problem is said as“The battle we are fighting is not against a particular group. It is against human nature itself—or at least what it has become”. The exact phrasing didn’t mean the battle was against humans, but simply the malice inside all humans that left the world nearly demolished.
