The VideoLAN group (who created this application) always pushes regular updates weekly and you will get an automated notification when you open the application. From my opinion when using VLC, i feel that their updates are too often. I can see that each 3 or 4 days they give me an update notification. However I'd like to see some improvements if possible:
+ User Interface: At the moment the interface looks quite bad. It's just look too obsolete in comparision to present application. So I hope that they will update the interface of VLC.
+ Simplify the toolbar: It's look too complicated when you hover and open some of advanced functionality
+ Playback quality: When it comes to work with 4k video or more, the player does not as smooth as usual

To protect yourself while using VLC, only use it to open trustworthy files, and keep the program updated to the most recent version. As I said in my previous presentation, it's based on yourself. Although it's pretty reliable, due to multiple reasons including problems with pre-loading of MKV files, corrupted program components, or compatibility issues, VLC can crash.
